Lumber Volume and Value Recovery from Small-Diameter Black Cherry, Sugar Maple, and Red Oak Logs

open access: yesBioResources, 2016
While only a very small percentage of hardwood logs sawn by conventional sawmills in the U.S. have small-end diameters less than 10 in, portable and scragg mills often saw smaller logs.

Effects of Wildfire and the Presence of the Invasive Paulownia tomentosa on the Regeneration of Native Tree Species in North-Central Appalachia

open access: yesFire, 2021
A wildfire occurred in Shawnee State Forest located in southern Ohio that consumed 1215 hectares. Based on earlier forest inventories it was known that paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa), a non-native invasive tree species, occurred in the forest.

Acer palmatum 'Burgundy Lace': 'Burgundy Lace' Japanese Maple

open access: yesEDIS, 2003
This cultivar of Japanese Maple has a height and spread of about 12 feet. The multiple trunks are picturesque, grey and show nicely when lit up at night. `Burgundy Lace' Japanese Maple is grown for its purple-red colored leaves, interesting growth habit

Role of Tree Species, the Herb Layer and Watershed Characteristics in Nitrate Assimilation in a Central Appalachian Hardwood Forest

open access: yesNitrogen, 2022
Forest plants that can assimilate nitrate may act as nitrate sink and, consequently, reduce nitrate losses from watershed ecosystems through leaching.

Splenic Tropism and Spleen‐Modulated Systemic Inflammation in Acute Plasmodium vivax Malaria

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In chronic Plasmodium vivax (Pv) infection, the spleen accounts for over 98% of total‐body parasite biomass. Whether splenic tropism also occurs in acute infection and how the spleen influences pathogenesis have not been systematically explored. In Papua, Indonesia, we compared clinical and hematology data in 24 spleen‐intact and 25 previously

Comparing Drought Responses of Red Oak (Quercus rubra) and Red Maple (Acer rubrum) in Field-grown Nursery Production

open access: yesJournal of the American Society for Horticultural Science
The plant nursery industry in Oregon faces increasing challenges from climate change, particularly concerning the cultivation of shade trees grown in nursery production. Shade trees are multimillion-dollar agricultural commodity in Oregon, the number one

Simulated changes in biogenic VOC emissions and ozone formation from habitat expansion of Acer Rubrum (red maple)

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2014
A new vegetation trend is emerging in northeastern forests of the United States, characterized by an expansion of red maple at the expense of oak.

Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal how girdling promotes leaf color expression in Acer rubrum L

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2022
Highlights 1. Comparisons between leaves on girdled and non-girdled branches of red maple showed that leaf color change is a coevolutionary phenomenon of maple in response to abiotic stress. 2.

Red Maple () Aerial Parts as a Source of Bioactive Phenolics

open access: yesNatural Product Communications, 2015
The bark and stems of red maple ( Acer rubrum ) are reported to contain bioactive phenolics but its aerial parts, namely, flowers and leaves, remain largely unexplored.

Forest under stress: responses and recovery of water relations across scales during the compound drought in summer 2022. [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytol
A schematic showing the links of tree‐scale (root‐, stem‐, and leaf‐level) and ecosystem‐scale water relations during the CSAD at CH‐Lae. Summary The summer of 2022 was characterized by compound soil and atmospheric drought (CSAD; low soil water content, SWC, and high vapor pressure deficit, VPD) in Central Europe, threatening forest carbon ...
