Silvical characteristics of red maple (Acer rubrum)

open access: yes, 1961
18 páginasRed maple (Acer rubrum L.) is also known as Carolina red maple, scarlet maple, soft maple, swamp maple, water maple, and white maple. Taxonomists recognize several varieties of red maple.

Remote sensing of american maple in alluvial forests: a case study in an island complex of the Loire valley (France)

open access: yesiForest - Biogeosciences and Forestry, 2020
Due to their particular topographic position between land and river, riparian forests are ecosystems rich in biodiversity. In France, along the Middle Loire (from Nevers to Angers), Black poplar (Populus nigra L.) forests are often in mixtures with the ...

Road salt inputs alter biogeochemistry but not plant community composition in exurban forested wetlands

open access: yesEcosphere, 2021
Forested wetlands of the temperate north are increasingly exposed to deicing salts, but it is unclear how this may alter wetland biogeochemistry and plant community composition.

Living on the edge: Habitat characteristics of northern myotis at the periphery of its distribution

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Northern myotis selected tall trees with minimal decay, in patches with other roosting options. In our study area, these trees occurred in narrow bands within an agricultural matrix, differing from contiguous forest at the core of the species' distribution. Nevertheless, bats selected the tallest trees in the densest patches available.

Identifying forest features that increase resiliency of southern‐boundary snowshoe hare populations in Pennsylvania

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Snowshoe hare population densities in Pennsylvania were greatest in early‐successional forest and densely‐understoried mature forest. Forest management that increases and maintains the amount of early‐successional forest, or that increases understory complexity in mature forest, would benefit snowshoe hares and may mitigate population declines under ...

Cotton strips as a model substrate for analysis of leaf‐litter‐colonizing microbial assemblages in streams

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Leaf‐litter decomposition is a key indicator of the functional integrity of stream ecosystems and cotton strips have been employed as a standard substrate for quantification of litter‐decomposition rates in streams across the globe. Cotton strips also offer a standardized method for assessing structural integrity of stream microbial ...

Informing the potential of mature temperate forests as natural climate solutions: Changed fine root biomass and morphology under elevated CO2

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The land carbon sink absorbs approximately 25% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, with forests accounting for most. Managing forests as Natural Climate Solutions is therefore a societal imperative, requiring models of where and how long carbon resides within these ecosystems. We investigated the effects of elevated CO2 on fine roots, the primary source of

Enhance food plant diversity conservation and use through greater coordination between genebanks and botanic gardens

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Food plants are vital to human and planetary health, but their diversity is threatened, making food security, nutrition, and environmental goals more difficult to achieve. Food plant diversity conservation, research, and education can be enhanced through collaboration between sectors, including genebanks and botanic gardens, which possess complementary
