Chronic, nonproductive cough may result from enhanced sensitivity of the cough reflex. Often, this debilitating symptom is refractory to standard antitussive therapy. Baclofen, an agonist of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), has been shown, in animals, to have antitussive activity via a central mechanism.
