Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

HIV-1 Envelope Glycoprotein Trafficking and Viral Transmission

open access: yesProceedings, 2020
HIV-1 encodes an envelope glycoprotein complex (Env) containing a long cytoplasmic tail (CT) harboring trafficking motifs implicated in Env incorporation into virions.

Teaching Replication

open access: yesPerspectives on Psychological Science, 2012
Replication is held as the gold standard for ensuring the reliability of published scientific literature. But conducting direct replications is expensive, time-consuming, and unrewarded under current publication practices. So who will do them? Our answer is that students in laboratory classes should replicate recent findings as part of their training ...

Biophysical analysis of angiotensin II and amyloid‐β cross‐interaction in aggregation and membrane disruption

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Angiotensin II (AngII), a neuropeptide, interacts with amyloid‐β (Aβ), a key player in Alzheimer's disease. This study reveals that AngII reduces Aβ aggregation and membrane disruption in vitro. Biophysical assays and molecular modeling suggest AngII binds disordered Aβ forms, potentially modulating early amyloidogenic events and contributing to ...

Recombination by Replication [PDF]

open access: yesCell, 1996
The evidence summarized above strongly suggests that E. coli cells deal with exposed double-stranded ends by a process that requires both homologous recombination and DNA replication functions. This process could lead to recombinant formation. Importantly, inhibition of recombination-dependent replication in priA null mutants does not completely block ...

Compression by replication [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2014
A recently introduced inference method based on system replication and an online message passing algorithm is employed to complete a previously suggested compression scheme based on a nonlinear perceptron. The algorithm is shown to approach the information theoretical bounds for compression as the number of replicated systems increases, offering ...

4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase in malaria parasites and enhances atovaquone efficacy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Atovaquone is an antimalarial requiring potentiation for sufficient efficacy. We pursued strategies to enhance its activity, showing that 4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase, decreasing ubiquinone biosynthesis. Since atovaquone competes with ubiquinol in mitochondria, 4‐nitrobenzoate facilitates its action, potentiating ...

HIV Expression in Infected T Cell Clones

open access: yesViruses
The principal barrier to an HIV-1 cure is the persistence of infected cells harboring replication-competent proviruses despite antiretroviral therapy (ART).

How to package the RNA of HIV-1

open access: yeseLife, 2020
Interactions between viral RNA and the integrase enzyme are required for HIV-1 particles to become infectious, a process that can be disrupted through multiple mechanisms.
