Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Gene inactivations extending reproductive lifespan.

open access: yes, 2014
32 gene inactivations extend reproductive lifespan more than 25% in the RNAi hypersensitive strain, nre-1(hd20)lin-15b(hd126) (A). 26 of those gene inactivations also significantly increase reproductive lifespan of wild type (N2) (B).

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Reproductive factors associated with cardiovascular risk among rural women: A community-based cross-sectional study from South India

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Medicine and Research
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality among women in low- and middle-income countries. Reproductive factors such as age at menarche, parity, and age at menopause may influence long-term cardiometabolic risk through ...

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Reproductive Characteristics, Postmenopausal Obesity, and Cardiovascular Disease Incidence in the Women's Health Initiative

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background Early menarche, menopause, and short reproductive lifespan are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), but whether these reproductive characteristics are independently associated with CVD or influenced by obesity is unclear.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Age-resistant worker reproductive potential and effect of helpers on prolonged lifespan in an ant

open access: yesBMC Biology
Background Aging theory suggests that animals should reproduce early at a cost to longevity, leading to a fecundity-longevity trade-off. Social insects with long-lived reproductive queens and short-lived helper workers are notable exceptions, primarily ...

Dependence of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae post-reproductive lifespan on the reproductive potential [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The lifespan of budding yeast cells is divided into two stages: reproductive and post-reproductive. The post-reproductive stage of the yeast's lifespan has never been characterized before.
