Methodology in Research on Speech Patterns

open access: yesJournal of Modern Languages, 2017
This study considers the concept of methodology, in which the methodology is a term that is used to refer basically to methods involved in testing a hypothesis or finding answers to a research question.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Design of Early Validation Trials of Biomarkers

open access: yesCancer Informatics, 2005
: The design of early-phase studies of putative screening markers in clinical populations is discussed. Biological, epidemiological, statistical and computational issues all affect the design of early-phase studies of these markers, but there are ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A Methodological Quality Assessment of Meta‐Analyses on Sleep Disorder Treatments Using AMSTAR 2

open access: yesBrain and Behavior
Background: Meta‐analyses (MAs) provide up‐to‐date, quantified evidence on treatment effects, which may be useful for clinical and policy decision‐making. However, the quality of MAs varies, and methodological flaws can limit their reliability.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Social Sustainability: A design research approach to sustainable development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
While issues such as clean production and energy efficiency are still central in sustainable development discourse, attention is increasingly on patterns of consumption at multiple levels in society.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
