Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

The influence of thermal stress on the interface strength of a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic investigated by a novel single fibre technique

open access: yes, 2010
The present work focuses on further verification of the hypothesis that the level of apparent IFSS in glass fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites can be modelled satisfactorily by assuming that the main component of the IFSS is actually due to a ...

Experimental study on dynamic response and residual compressive strength of composite sandwich panel with PVC foam core under single-point low-velocity impact

open access: yesZhongguo Jianchuan Yanjiu
ObjectivesIn this paper, an orthogonal braided glass fiber composite sandwich panel with a PVC foam core and dimensions of 150 mm×100 mm×26 mm is selected as the research object in order to study the impact mechanical properties of composite sandwich ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

An experimental and computational investigation of bone cement residual stresses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Hip arthroplasty is a common orthopaedic procedure with considerable success in alleviating hip joint pain and disability. To transfer loads from the prosthesis to the contiguous bone, self-curing polymethyl methacrylate, often referred to as bone cement,
