Spatiotemporal and genomic analysis of carbapenem resistance elements in Enterobacterales from hospital inpatients and natural water ecosystems of an Irish city

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) is a diverse group of often multidrug-resistant organisms. Surveillance and control of infections are complicated due to the inter-species spread of carbapenemase-encoding genes (CEGs) on mobile genetic ...

Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

Ecology, alterity and resistance in Sardinia

open access: yesSocial Anthropology, 2001

Protective Microbiota: From Localized to Long-Reaching Co-Immunity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Resident microbiota do not just shape host immunity, they can also contribute to host protection against pathogens and infectious diseases. Previous reviews of the protective roles of the microbiota have focused exclusively on colonization resistance ...

Biodegradable and Recyclable Luminescent Mixed‐Matrix‐Membranes, Hydrogels, and Cryogels based on Nanoscale Metal‐Organic Frameworks and Biopolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents biodegradable and recyclable mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs), hydrogels, and cryogels using luminescent nanoscale metal‐organic frameworks (nMOFs) and biopolymers. These bio‐nMOF‐MMMs combine europium‐based nMOFs as probes for the status of the materials with the biopolymers agar and gelatine and present alternatives to conventional ...

Characterisation of Citrobacter freundii and Enterobacter cloacae complex isolates co-carrying blaNDM-1 and mcr-9 from three hospitals

open access: yesJournal of Global Antimicrobial Resistance
Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health concern related to antimicrobial use and the subsequent emergence of resistant organisms, including carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE). CPE isolate co-carrying blaNDM-1 and mcr-9.1

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Isolates From Healthy Pigs in Australia: Results of a Pilot National Survey

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
This study investigated the frequency of antimicrobial non-susceptibility (defined as the frequency of isolates with minimum inhibitory concentrations above the CLSI susceptible clinical breakpoint) among E. coli and Salmonella spp. isolated from healthy

Impact of the new membrane-targeting lipoglycopeptide antibiotic MCC5145 on the treatment of bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia in mice

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2023
Bacteremic Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia is one of the most severe forms of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and with particularly high case-fatality rates among the elderly and individuals with comorbidities, exacerbated by rising antibiotic ...

Increasing ecological heterogeneity can constrain biopesticide resistance evolution

open access: yesTrends in Ecology & Evolution, 2023
Microbial biopesticides containing living parasites are valuable emerging crop protection technologies against insect pests, but they are vulnerable to resistance evolution. Fortunately, the fitness of alleles that provide resistance, including to parasites used in biopesticides, frequently depends on parasite identity and environmental conditions ...

Increase of an introduced bird competitor in old-growth forest associated with restoration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Many successful invasions involve long initial periods in which the invader exists at low densities followed by sudden population increases. The reasons for such time-lags remain poorly understood.
