Novel FKS1 and FKS2 modifications in a high-level echinocandin resistant clinical isolate of Candida glabrata

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections, 2019
Echinocandin resistance in Candida glabrata poses a serious clinical challenge. The underlying resistance mechanism of a pan-echinocandin-resistant C. glabrata isolate (strain L74) was investigated in this study.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Clinical outcomes of EGFR-TKI in advanced lung squamous cell carcinoma and EGFR-TKI remodel tumor immune microenvironment

open access: yesAnnals of Medicine
Background Clinical data is scarce in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), and the resistance mechanisms to EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) is rarely studied. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Functional assessment of cadherin as a shared mechanism for cross/dual resistance to Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab in Helicoverpa zea

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture
Helicoverpa zea is a major target pest of pyramided transgenic crops expressing Cry1, Cry2 and/or Vip3Aa proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in the United States.

Fosfomycin: Mechanism and Resistance [PDF]

open access: yesCold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine, 2017
Fosfomycin, a natural product antibiotic, has been in use for >20 years in Spain, Germany, France, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa for urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other indications and was registered in the United States for the oral treatment of uncomplicated UTIs because of Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli in 1996.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Study on resistance mechanisms and molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa to ceftazidime/avibactam in a certain region of China

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa(CRPA) poses a serious threat in healthcare settings due to its multidrug resistance and high mortality. Although ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) demonstrates potent activity against CRPA, resistance has emerged ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
