Application of Random Vibration Techniques to Resonant Column Testing
GeoFlorida 2010, 2010A 152.4 mm (6 in) diameter resonant column device was modified to enable the direct measurement of torsional acceleration transfer functions of samples subjected to random excitation in the small-strain regime. Samples were tested over a wide range of confining pressures. By measuring the rotational acceleration of the end platens, the need to estimate

An Automatic Feedback System for Resonant Column Testing
Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1990Abstract A test method and electronic circuitry is described that greatly simplifies measurement of resonant frequency in the resonant column test. It utilizes a feedback system to detect resonance automatically without requiring manual adjustment and also eliminates the need for a sine wave audio oscillator or oscilloscope.

Elastic Stiffness of Volcanic Sand through Resonant Column Tests
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015The resonant column method is established as a standard laboratory method for the study of the elastic properties of soils. The study presents low-amplitude resonant column test results on volcanic sands with intra-particle voids. The experiments were performed on dry samples prepared at variable relative densities and tested in torsional mode of ...

Effects of Imperfect Fixity in Spring-Top Resonant Column Tests
Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1990Abstract A two-degree-of-freedom model is proposed to study the effects of imperfect fixity at the active end of the spring-top resonant column apparatus. A computer program using the SYMPHONY spreadsheet is developed to calculate the dimensionless frequency, F, from which the modulus can be determined.

Resonant-Column Testing—Problems and Solutions
1978The resonant-column test is a relatively nondestructive test employing wave propagation in cylindrical specimens of soil and rock. Test results are usually quite accurate, but in some cases insufficient coupling exists between specimen and apparatus or specimens are too stiff for a given apparatus, or both.

Resonant Column Testing of Sands with Different Viscosity Pore Fluids
Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2000The effect of pore fluid viscosity on the stiffness, damping, and liquefaction characteristics of sands was investigated to assess the potential contributions to a centrifuge model seismic response for soils saturated with high-viscosity pore fluid.

Radial Strain Measurements in Resonant Column and Torsional Shear Tests
Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 1996During resonant column and torsional shear tests using a Stokoe device, conventionally only the change in height of the specimen is measured. To obtain the change in diameter of the specimen, a relationship between radial strain and longitudinal strain is assumed.

Sample Coupling in Resonant Column Testing of Cemented Soils
1990Low-strain shear moduli of lightly cemented sand can be obtained by testing specimens in a resonant column. In the literature a variety of techniques have been suggested for coupling the sample to the base and cap of the device. These studies' results suggest that the shear modulus of cemented sand changes with confining pressure.

Difference between current and voltage measurements in resonant-column testing
Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2003The resonant-column test is one of the most common procedures for dynamic characterization of soils (American Society for Testing and Materials standard). The test procedures require the measurement of the current flowing through the driving coils. In many cases, however, the input voltage has been measured and the results analyzed as a traditional ...

Two Bender Receivers Frequency Domain Analysis in Resonant Column Tests
Advances in Soil Dynamics and Foundation Engineering, 2014The installation of bender elements (BE) in different geotechnical testing devices has been increasing in recent years. One of the most widespread combinations in this matter is the use of BE in resonant-column (RC) equipment. Taking into account that the piezoceramic elements can work alternatively as a transmitter or as a receiver, a complementary ...
