Unlocking influenza B: exploring molecular biology and reverse genetics for epidemic control and vaccine innovation

open access: yesVirology Journal
Influenza is a highly contagious acute viral illness that affects the respiratory system, posing a significant global public health concern. Influenza B virus (IBV) causes annual seasonal epidemics.

CRISPR: a versatile tool for both forward and reverse genetics research

open access: yes, 2016
Human genetics research employs the two opposing approaches of forward and reverse genetics. While forward genetics identifies and links a mutation to an observed disease etiology, reverse genetics induces mutations in model organisms to study their role

Reverse Genetics Systems for Filoviruses

open access: yes, 2023
Filoviruses are causative agents of severe hemorrhagic fevers with high case fatality rates in humans. For studies of virus biology and the subsequent development of countermeasures, reverse genetic systems, and especially those facilitating the ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Construction of a Recombinant Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus Encoding Nanoluciferase for High-Throughput Screening of Natural Antiviral Products

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is the predominant cause of an acute, highly contagious enteric disease in neonatal piglets. There are currently no approved drugs against PEDV infection.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Efficient Plasmid-Based Rescue of T7 RNA Polymerase-Driven Calicivirus Reverse Genetics Systems in Mammalian Cells Using Vaccinia Virus RNA-Capping Enzymes

open access: yesViruses
The caliciviruses include important human and animal pathogens such as norovirus, sapovirus and feline calicivirus. Viral reverse genetics is performed to understand the fundamental biology of these viruses, as well as a potential route to generate live ...

An optimized circular polymerase extension reaction-based method for functional analysis of SARS-CoV-2

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2023
Background Reverse genetics systems have been crucial for studying specific viral genes and their relevance in the virus lifecycle, and become important tools for the rational attenuation of viruses and thereby for vaccine design.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...
