The Myokine Irisin Represents an Indirect Pathway Linking Exercise to Hippocampal Subfields Relevant to Alzheimer's Disease and Neurogenesis

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 5, May 2026.
We provide the first human evidence that the exercise‐induced myokine irisin mediates the relationship between physical activity and hippocampal volume in older adults, with strongest effects in CA1, CA3 and CA4 subfields. These regions are critical for memory and particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease.

Cost‐effectiveness of percutaneous nephrostomy vs JJ stent in obstructive urolithiasis: economic evaluation alongside the STent Or NEphrostomy (STONE) randomised controlled trial

open access: yesBJU International, Volume 137, Issue 5, Page 906-913, May 2026.
Objective To evaluate whether percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) is cost‐effective compared to JJ ureteric stent in the acute treatment of obstructive urolithiasis. Patients and Methods A randomised controlled non‐inferiority trial with 204 patients with obstructive urolithiasis requiring decompression.

Microbiome‐Based Modeling of CAR‐T Therapy Response in Lymphoma: Insights From Shotgun Metagenomics Sequencing

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Haematology, Volume 116, Issue 5, Page 646-662, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The interplay between the commensal microbiota and the mammalian immune system may influence the outcomes of T cell‐driven cancer immunotherapies. However, clinical studies supporting microbiota‐based interventions in chimeric antigen receptor T‐cell (CAR‐T) therapy remain scarce.

Coordinating a bi‐level blood supply chain with interactions between supply‐side and demand‐side operational decisions

open access: yesInternational Transactions in Operational Research, Volume 33, Issue 3, Page 1971-2015, May 2026.
Abstract In most blood supply chains, blood centers and hospitals make individual decisions, resulting in an inefficient structure of the blood supply chain, which in turn renders supply and demand matching a challenging exercise. In this work, we make the very first attempt to optimize the interaction between blood centers and hospitals.

Predictors of Complications and Recurrence After Pressure Injury Reconstruction in Spinal Cord Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesInternational Wound Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Spinal cord injury (SCI) predisposes patients to pressure injuries (PIs) often requiring surgery. Multiple factors influence postoperative complications and recurrence, though their associations remain unclear. We performed a PRISMA‐guided systematic review and meta‐analysis to assess predictors of acute postoperative complications and PI ...
