Review: Rhinoviruses and their ICAM receptors

open access: yes, 1999
The normal function of human intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is to provide adhesion between endothelial cells and leukocytes after injury or stress. ICAM-1 binds to leukocyte function-associated antigen or macrophage-1 antigen. However, ICAM-1

Circulation of respiratory viruses during the COVID-19 pandemic in The Gambia [version 2; peer review: 2 approved]

open access: yesGates Open Research, 2023
Background: In many countries, non-pharmaceutical interventions to limit severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission resulted in significant reductions in other respiratory viruses.

The Korea Chemical Bank: Over 25 years of national chemical infrastructure alongside KRICT's 50‐year journey

open access: yesBulletin of the Korean Chemical Society, EarlyView.
This graphic abstract illustrates the role of the Korea Chemical Bank (KCB) as a central national hub that integrates government R&D, academic compound deposits, and industrial drug discovery throughout the latter half of KRICT's 50‐year history. Abstract Since its establishment in 2000 under the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT),

Rhinoviruses

open access: yes, 2014
Picornaviruses, which include the human rhinoviruses (HRVs) and enteroviruses (EVs), are the most frequent cause of acute human illness worldwide. HRVs are the most prevalent cause of acute respiratory tract illnesses (ARIs) which usually commence in the

Biochemical testing and pathology reveal rare cause of pediatric acute liver failure: Hyperornithinemia‐hyperammonemia‐homocitrullinuria syndrome

open access: yesJPGN Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Hyperornithinemia‐hyperammonemia‐homocitrullinuria (HHH) syndrome is a rare metabolic condition that can cause lethargy, ataxia, tachypnea, nausea, vomiting, seizures, coma, and acute liver failure. We present a 26‐month‐old female with acute liver failure who was diagnosed with HHH 1 week after admission. Histology revealed an acute hepatitic

Emphysema in an 11‐month‐old boy with alpha‐1 antitrypsin deficiency

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
Pediatric development of emphysema in Alpha‐1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (A1ATD) has been rarely described. In this case report, we document an 11‐month boy with A1ATD phenotype PiZZ with basilar centrilobular emphysema, the earliest such documented case.

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Productive Entry Pathways of Human Rhinoviruses

open access: yesAdvances in Virology, 2012
Currently, complete or partial genome sequences of more than 150 human rhinovirus (HRV) isolates are known. Twelve species A use members of the low-density lipoprotein receptor family for cell entry, whereas the remaining HRV-A and all HRV-B bind ICAM-1.
