Are there insertions in the ribosomal DNA of vertebrates? [PDF]
We have analysed the Eco RI restriction pattern of rDNA of the newt Triturus vulgaris and of some other amphibian species by Southern blotting and hybridization with nick-translated Xenopus rDNA prepared from the recombinant plasmids pXlr11 and pXlr12 (21).

Ribosomal DNA heterochromatin in plants [PDF]
The aim of this review is to integrate earlier results and recent findings to present the current state-of-the-art vision concerning the dynamic behavior of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) fraction in plants. The global organization and behavioral features of rDNA make it a most useful system to analyse the relationship between chromatin topology and gene ...

DNA Binding by the Ribosomal DNA Transcription Factor Rrn3 Is Essential for Ribosomal DNA Transcription [PDF]
The human homologue of yeast Rrn3 is an RNA polymerase I-associated transcription factor that is essential for ribosomal DNA (rDNA) transcription. The generally accepted model is that Rrn3 functions as a bridge between RNA polymerase I and the transcription factors bound to the committed template. In this model Rrn3 would mediate an interaction between

Characterization of Yeast Ribosomal DNA [PDF]
High‐molecular‐weight yeast ribosomal DNA, purified by preparative Hg2/Cs2SO4 gradient centrifugation, was characterized using RNA‐DNA hybridization, CsCl gradient analysis and denaturation‐renaturation experiments. The following conclusions are drawn from the results of these studies.

Heterogeneity of Pumpkin Ribosomal DNA [PDF]
The ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of Cucurbita pepo L. has been found to consist of tandemly arrayed repeat units, most of which are 10 kilobases in length. Thirty-six repeat units, cloned into the HindIII site of pACYC 177, fall into seven classes which differ from each other in length and/or nucleotide sequence.

Challenges and Approaches to Genotyping Repetitive DNA
Individuals within a species can exhibit vast variation in copy number of repetitive DNA elements. This variation may contribute to complex traits such as lifespan and disease, yet it is only infrequently considered in genotype-phenotype associations ...

Telomere and ribosomal DNA repeats are chromosomal targets of the bloom syndrome DNA helicase
Background Bloom syndrome is one of the most cancer-predisposing disorders and is characterized by genomic instability and a high frequency of sister chromatid exchange. The disorder is caused by loss of function of a 3' to 5' RecQ DNA helicase, BLM. The

Diversity of fermentative yeasts with probiotic potential isolated from Thai fermented food products
This research aimed to evaluate the diversity of yeasts recovered from fermented foods gathered from some areas of Northeastern Thailand. The fermented food items included Pla-som, Nham-pla, Kem-buknud, Isan-sausage, Pla-ra, Mhum-neu, Mhum-Khai-pla, Nham-

Spatial organization of bacterial transcription and translation [PDF]
In bacteria such as $\textit{Escherichia coli}$, DNA is compacted into a nucleoid near the cell center, while ribosomes$-$molecular complexes that translate messenger RNAs (mRNAs) into proteins$-$are mainly localized at the poles. We study the impact of this spatial organization using a minimal reaction-diffusion model for the cellular transcriptional ...

Ribosomal DNA-connecting ribosome biogenesis and chromosome biology [PDF]
Ribosomal DNA, the topic of this special issue, has long fascinated biologists. The RNA products of the ribosomal DNA are the ribosomal RNAs that are part of the ribosome. In this special issue, we focus on the sequence, molecular organization, repair, stability, copy number, and peculiar genetics of this region of the genome.
