A Spectroscopic Study on Secondary Structure and Thermal Unfolding of the Plant Toxin Gelonin Confirms Some Typical Structural Characteristics and Unravels the Sequence of Thermal Unfolding Events

open access: yesToxins, 2019
Gelonin from the Indian plant Gelonium multiflorum belongs to the type I ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs). Like other members of RIPs, this toxin glycoprotein inhibits protein synthesis of eukaryotic cells; hence, it is largely used in the ...

Structure and Biological Properties of Ribosome-Inactivating Proteins and Lectins from Elder (Sambucus nigra L.) Leaves

open access: yesToxins, 2022
Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are a group of proteins with rRNA N-glycosylase activity that catalyze the removal of a specific adenine located in the sarcin–ricin loop of the large ribosomal RNA, which leads to the irreversible inhibition of ...

Lectin domains at the frontiers of plant defense [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Plants are under constant attack from pathogens and herbivorous insects. To protect and defend themselves, plants evolved a multi-layered surveillance system, known as the innate immune system.

Novel small molecule retrograde transport blocker confers post-exposure protection against ricin intoxication

open access: yesActa Pharmaceutica Sinica B, 2020
Ricin is a highly toxic type 2 ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) which is extracted from the seeds of castor beans. Ricin is considered a potential bioterror agent and no effective antidote for ricin exists so far.

Constitutive and inducible type 1 ribosome‐inactivating proteins (RIPs) in elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.)

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1998
Two novel highly basic type 1 (single chain) ribosome‐inactivating proteins (RIPs) with N‐glycosidase activity have been found in elderberries (the fruits of Sambucus nigra L.). Mass spectrometry of these RIPs, which we named nigritins f1 and f2, gave M r values of 24 095 and 23 565, respectively.

Visualization of Endosomal Escape of Intracellularly Delivered Protein With Unexpected Photochemical Internalization of Trypan Blue

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
TB, a conventional cell viability dye, acts as both a fluorescence modulator (quenching GFP fluorescence upon protein binding and recovering it upon release) and a photosensitizer that triggers endosomal escape via photochemical internalization (PCI) under 590 nm light.

Expression of the alpha-thionin gene from barley in tobacco confers enhanced resistance to bacterial pathogens [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Thionins are cysteine-rich, 5 kDa polypeptides which are toxic to plant pathogens in vitro. Expression of the gene encoding alpha-thionin from barley endosperm, under the 35S promoter from cauliflower mosaic virus, conferred to transgenic tobacco ...

Molecular characterization and systemic induction of single-chain ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) leaves [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Botany, 2005
Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) leaves contain virus-inducible type 1 (single chain) ribosome-inactivating proteins that have been named beetins. The structural and functional characterization, the cellular location, and the potential role of beetins as antiviral agents are reported here.

N4‐acetylcytidine in LncRNA Gm26917 Promotes Translation in Female Germline Stem Cells by Recruiting Ribosomal Protein mRNA via EEF1A1

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work establishes that ac4C modification on lncRNA Gm26917 governs its spatial interactions with Rpl10 mRNA, and RBP EEF1A1 mediates the interaction between Gm26917 and Rpl10. It elucidates a novel ac4C‐Gm26917‐EEF1A1‐Rpl10 axis in FGSC maintenance both in vitro and in vivo, and provides a potential molecular target for modulating germ cell ...
