Improved reflectance calculation in full-waveform LiDAR considering the angle of incidence [PDF]

open access: yesISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
Reflectance is a widely used feature for all types laser scanning data. Thus, the accuracy and improvement of the reflectance parameter is a persistent topic of research. For short laser pulses with medium-sized footprints, previous work has investigated

Coral size patterns across environmental gradients and morphologies

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Coral reefs are essential ecosystems that provide important ecological services and support the livelihoods of millions of people worldwide. Understanding the size structure of coral populations is critical for assessing recovery potential; yet, our knowledge of how environmental conditions influence coral size structure, across a range of ...

Mapping River Bed Topography in Whitewater Rapids Using Bathymetric LiDAR

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 42, Issue 4, Page 886-900, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Bathymetric LiDAR captures river topography efficiently for clear and shallow water, but for mountain rivers, whitewater rapids still pose challenges. This study proposes a novel method to enable the extraction of bottom returns specifically in turbulent whitewater sections.

Observations of the Subsurface Structure of TKE Dissipation Rates Near the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract We present observations of subsurface turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rates under moderate‐to‐strong wind forcing on the western North Atlantic shelf. Estimates derived using the structure function method show a clear enhancement relative to law‐of‐the‐wall expectations in the upper water column, with convergence toward rigid‐wall ...

Assessing the Spatiotemporal Variability in Geotechnical Sediment Properties of Beach Cusps on a Sandy Beach

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract This study examined the spatiotemporal variability in geotechnical properties of beach cusp sediments on a sandy beach and tested if such variability can be used for cusp monitoring from satellite imagery. Specifically, sediment properties (including moisture content (w), relative density (Dr), sediment strength (QSBC) and friction angle (ϕ ...

Was Alois Riegl Colour Blind?

open access: yesCLARA, 2022
In his formalist art history, Alois Riegl (1858-1905) focuses on figure and ground, light and dark, and tactile versus optical features. Strangely, he shows little interest in colour. Thus, in Stilfragen (1893) and in Spätrömische Kunstindustrie (1901) artefacts and monuments are discussed as if they were fashioned in black and white.

Development and Evaluation of a Simple Geometric Radiation Absorption Model for Discontinuous Canopies With Ellipsoidal Crown Shapes

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Large‐scale canopy models utilizing satellite data typically rely on simplified models to describe radiation absorption by vegetation. However, these models' accuracy can be limited when applied to heterogeneous row‐oriented canopies because of assumptions of canopy homogeneity, or oversimplification of the impacts of heterogeneity. This study

Snow Water Storage Within Eight Pacific Coastal Watersheds in British Columbia (Canada) Inferred From Four Years of Airborne Lidar Data

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Maritime mountain snowpacks are among the least understood and most poorly quantified components of global snow water storage, despite their vital role in sustaining water supplies and ecosystem health. Here, we present a 4‐year record of snow mass distribution across eight small‐to‐medium‐sized (5.2–63.4 km2) watersheds within the coastal ...
