Tidally Distorted Barytropes and Their Roche Limits, with Application to WASP-12b

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2022
Abstract The hot Jupiter WASP-12b has been found to be on a decaying 1.09 day orbit. The mean density of the planet inferred from transit and radial-velocity data is near its Roche limit; just how near depends on the planet’s uncertain internal structure. There is also spectroscopic evidence of mass loss.

The ‘Roche-Limit’ of ionospheric plasma and the formation of the plasmapause

Planetary and Space Science, 1974
Abstract The plasmapause position is determined by the innermost equipotential surface which is tangent to the ‘Roche-Limit’ surface of the ionospheric plasma filling the magnetosphere. When the thermal particles corotate with the Earth's angular velocity, the ‘Roche-Limit’ equatorial distance is L c =5.78 [ R E ].

Numerical Simulations of Collisional Cascades at the Roche Limits of White Dwarf Stars [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2017
AbstractWe consider the long-term collisional and dynamical evolution of solid material orbiting in a narrow annulus near the Roche limit of a white dwarf. With orbital velocities of 300 , systems of solids with initial eccentricitygenerate a collisional cascade where objects with radiiare ground to dust. This process converts 1–100 km asteroids into 1

Roche limit for homogeneous incompressible masses

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1983
The aim of the present investigation has been to establish the minimum distance (commonly referred to as the 'Roche limit'), to which a small satellite can approach its central star without loss of its stability. In order to do so, we shall depart from hydrodynamical equations governing small oscillations of stellar structures, and set out to establish

The Roche Limit

Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, 2003
The author gives a short review of historical development of ideas concerned with tidal fracture of a secondary body that can lead to mass loss. The Roche limit indicates the closest distance that a secondary body can approach the primary and remain stable under very idealized conditions.

The Roche limit based on vibrational stability

Chinese Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1985
Abstract Starting from the concept of vibrational stability, the Roche limit for a uniform incompressible liquid sphere is derived. It is shown how this method can be generalized to the case where there is a non-uniform matter distribution in the radial direction.

THE ROCHE LIMIT FOR CLOSE-ORBITING PLANETS: MINIMUM DENSITY, COMPOSITION CONSTRAINTS, AND APPLICATION TO THE 4.2 hr PLANET KOI 1843.03 [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal Letters, 2013
The requirement that a planet must orbit outside of its Roche limit gives a lower limit on the planet's mean density. The minimum density depends almost entirely on the orbital period and is immune to systematic errors in the stellar properties. We consider the implications of this density constraint for the newly-identified class of small planets with
