Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Research and engineering application of layout optimization for lockbolt structures in railway wagons considering multidimensional failure modes based on MSNSGA-III

open access: yesScientific Reports
The lockbolt structure is essential in railway wagons, and a scientific lockbolt layout can ensure uniform load distribution, thereby preventing failure. However, current engineering lacks layout optimization methods that address multidimensional failure

Determinants of Rolling Stock Maintenance Cost in Metros

open access: yes, 2015
This study examines the economies of scale and the determinants of rolling stock maintenance costs for 24 urban rail transit operators. The estimates reveal significant returns to scale in maintenance for both per car and per car kilometre.

DRD2 Deficiency Underlies Pituitary Adenoma Dependent on Escherichia coli Translocation from the Gut

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) deficiency disrupts epithelial barrier integrity in both the gut and pituitary gland, facilitating translocation of gut‐derived Escherichia coli into pituitary tissue. Intratumoral E. coli are phagocytosed by microglia, triggering GSDMD‐dependent pyroptosis and HMGB1 release, which subsequently activates MAPK signaling to ...

Dynamics of the Mammalian Placental Metabolome in Placentogenesis and Embryonic Development

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies three metabolic stages (E8.5, E9.5–10.5, E11.5–14.5) and two transition periods (E8.5–9.5, E10.5–11.5) in mouse placental development. NAD(H) emerges as a key dynamic metabolite that enhances embryonic growth through accelerated segmentation and increased proliferation of mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC)‐induced presomitic ...

IGF‐1 Deficiency Serves as an Integrated Biomarker Pathogenic Driver and Predictor in Poor Ovarian Response

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
IGF‐1 deficiency underlies poor ovarian response (POR), as reduced levels in follicular fluid and granulosa cells impair antral follicle formation and compromise reproductive outcomes. Including IGF‐1 as a biomarker significantly enhances the accuracy of models predicting both PORrisk and pregnancy success.

Wear rates in urban rail systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A significant part of maintenance costs in urban rail systems (metro, tram, light rapid transit/light metro) is due to wheel-rail wear. Wear rates - measured for example as depth of wear per kilometre run (rolling stock) or per train passage (rails ...

Design and Characterization of DX‐Tile DNA Nanostar‐Based Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this study, the authors demonstrated that DNA DX‐tile‐based multi‐arm motifs can be used to assemble pure DNA hydrogels, offering greater design flexibility and enhanced control over their mechanical properties and functionalization capabilities compared to single duplex‐based DNA hydrogels.

Low cycle fatigue analysis of welded joints considering material cycling behavior

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering
In order to describe the local cyclic behavior of welds during low cycle fatigue of welded structures, so as to effectively assess the low cycle fatigue of structures, a structural strain numerical method is proposed.
