The plasticity of root traits and their effects on crop yield and yield stability

open access: yesPlant and Soil
Abstract Context Phenotypic plasticity can be a valuable adaptation strategy for coping with environmental heterogeneity. There is limited information on the plasticity of root traits and their effect on yield and yield stability ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Genetic variation and determination the optimal crop age for harvest in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) accessions based on accumulated storage root yield

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture
The early optimal crop age for harvest is a desirable characteristic in cassava. Many cassava accessions have been disregarded due to their late maturity. In Ethiopia, there is a lack of data on cassava maturity studies, highlighting the need for further

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

IDENTIFICATION OF NITROGEN-USE-EFFICIENT AND DEEP ROOTED WHEAT GENOTYPES

open access: yesPakistan Journal of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering & Veterinary Sciences, 2016
Global food security is at high risk due to climate change. Wheat being the leading cereal of Pakistan finds a pivotal position in food security. Adaptation strategies to combat the adverse effects of climate change must focus on identification and use ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.
