Forage Plant Host and Early Feeding Choices Affect Spodoptera litura Feeding, Development and Egg‐Laying

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 7, Page 670-684, July 2026.
We assessed Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) performance on five common pasture plant species. Larvae consumed more dock, plantain and chicory per day than red or white clover, but with lower conversion efficiencies. Feeding on red clover reduced weights and egg laying, and lengthened development times compared with plantain.

Contrasting Carbon–Water–Energy Dynamics in Perennial and Annual Bioenergy Agroecosystems Using Eddy Covariance and Interpretable Machine Learning

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 7, July 2026.
Environmental drivers regulate carbon, water, and energy fluxes differently in perennial and annual bioenergy agroecosystems. Long‐term eddy covariance data and interpretable machine learning reveal broader temperature responses, more stable water‐use efficiency, and sustained air heating in perennials, contrasted with stronger atmospheric sensitivity ...

Rural Capitalists and Development in Colonial Africa: A Comparative Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, Volume 26, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper explores the emergence and role of rural capitalists in colonial Sub‐Saharan Africa by comparing three peasant‐based economies: Bechuanaland, the Gold Coast and Tanganyika. Using social tables, we estimate the population and income shares of better earning agricultural producers and assess their impact on rural inequality and ...

Beyond the Binary of Formal and Informal: Negotiating Hybrid Land Control by Chinese Banana Entrepreneurs in Laos

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, Volume 26, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT As transnational land investments continue to expand across the Global South, land governance in many settings is shifting from largely informal arrangements towards greater formalization. However, we know less about how entrepreneurs sustain and rework land control as host states tighten regulation and introduce new formal requirements and ...

Searching for Sustainability: Industrial Agriculture of Small Farmers in China and Its Structural Strains

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, Volume 26, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT The ‘sustainability turn’ in China's development paradigm is in part a response to the sustainability challenges—both ecologically and socially—that China's agrarian transition has generated. This article characterizes China's agrarian system as an ‘industrial agriculture of small farmers’ (IASF): industrial in method and social metabolism ...
