Multi-scale path planning for a planetary exploration vehicle with multiple locomotion modes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Planetary exploration vehicles (rovers) can encounter with a great variety of situations. Most of them are related to the terrain, which can cause the end of the mission if these vehicles are not able to traverse it.

Digital Actuation Control of Soft Robotic Origami With Self‐Folding Liquid Crystal Elastomer Hinges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐folding soft‐rigid hybrid robotic origami is enabled by liquid crystal elastomer actuators with embedded Joule heating and closed‐loop digital control. Digitally addressable hinges provide reversible and programmable transitions between distinct folded states while maintaining actuation performance at high cycle counts (over 1500).

Consensus Control of Multi-Hopping-Rover Systems: Convergence Analysis

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2023
A hopping rover is a mobile robot developed for exploring low-gravity planets. The movement is based on hopping motion for moving on rough ground in low gravity.

Amyloidogenic Peptide Fragments Designed From Bacterial Collagen‐like Proteins Form Hydrogel

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study identified amyloidogenic sequence motifs in bacterial collagen‐like proteins and exploited these to design peptides that self‐assemble into β‐sheet fibers and form hydrogels. One hydrogel supported healthy fibroblast growth, showing promise for biocompatible materials. Our work demonstrates that bacterial sequences can be harnessed to create

Potential field based navigation for planetary rovers using internal states [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The work in this paper aims to introduce analysis and applications for the internal state model which is a new model for a swarm of rovers interacting via pair-wise attractive and repulsive potentials.

Swelling‐Programmed Topographical Guidance for Dynamic Spheroid Self‐Assembly via a Mechanochemical Hydrogel Niche

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A swelling‐programmed micropatterned hydrogel guides adherent cells through a controlled transition from cell–matrix anchoring to cadherin‐mediated cell–cell compaction, enabling rapid assembly of high‐viability spheroids with defined size and morphology.

On multi-objective optimization of planetary exploration rovers applied to ExoMars-type rovers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
ExoMars is the first robotic mission of the Aurora program of the European Space Agency (EAS). Surface mobility (as provided by ExoMarks rover) is one of the enabling technologies necessary for future exploration missions.

Numerical Efficiency of Inverse Simulation Methods Applied to a Wheeled Rover [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Extending the navigational capability of planetary rovers is essential for increasing the scientific outputs from such exploratory missions. In this paper a navigation method based on Inverse Simulation is applied to a four wheel rover.

Phase Diagrams Enable Solid‐State Battery Design

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Batteries are non‐equilibrium devices with inherent thermodynamic driving forces to react at interfaces, regardless of kinetics or operating conditions. Chemical potential mismatches across interfaces are dissipated via interfacial reactions. In this work, it is illustrated how phase diagrams and chemical potential maps predict degradation pathways but
