Heterofucan from Sargassum filipendula Induces Apoptosis in HeLa Cells [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2011
Fucan is a term used to denominate a family of sulfated polysaccharides rich in sulfated L-fucose. Heterofucan SF-1.5v was extracted from the brown seaweed Sargassum filipendula by proteolytic digestion followed by sequential acetone precipitation.

Antioxidant and Antiproliferative Activities of Heterofucans from the Seaweed Sargassum filipendula [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2011
Fucan is a term used to denominate a type of polysaccharide which contains substantial percentages of L-fucose and sulfate ester groups. We obtained five heterofucans from Sargassum filipendula by proteolytic digestion followed by sequential acetone ...

Characterization and evaluation of copper and nickel biosorption on acidic algae Sargassum Filipendula [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2010
The marine algae Sargassum filipendula was collected from São Paulo seashore (Brazil) and submitted to treatment with acid. The biosorption mechanisms of Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions onto acidic algae Sargassum filipendula were examined using various analytical ...

Extraction of alginate biopolymer present in marine alga sargassum filipendula and bioadsorption of metallic ions [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2013
This paper studies the bioadsorption of Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions by marine alga Sargassum filipendula and by the alginate biopolymer extracted from this alga.

Stunted canopy: Marine forests under the thermal effluent of a nuclear power plant. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Phycol
Abstract It has been well established that warming beyond certain thresholds can negatively affect the growth of canopy‐forming macroalgae. However, most studies evaluating these effects have been conducted under controlled laboratory conditions. Observational studies investigating the impact of extreme temperatures on growth rates have been rare and ...

Multigene phylogenetics of Sargassum (Phaeophyceae) revealed low molecular diversity in contrast to high morphological variability in the NE Atlantic Ocean. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Phycol
Abstract Sargassum species play a key role in habitat formation in tropical and subtropical regions; however, species identification has been hampered by the phenological plasticity exhibited in response to environmental conditions and life history. Molecular phylogenetics has challenged taxa circumscriptions and proven critical in delimiting species ...

Biosorption study of Ni2+ and Cr3+ by Sargassum filipendula: kinetics and equilibrium [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 2014
In this work, the biosorption of Cr3+ and Ni2+ by Sargassum filipendula pre-treated with CaCl2 was studied. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were carried out for mono- and multi-component solutions in a batch reactor at pH 3.0 and 30 oC. The results from the kinetic experiments showed that Cr3+ adsorbs slower than Ni2+.
