Marine Toxins as Pharmaceutical Treasure Troves: A Focus on Saxitoxin Derivatives from a Computational Point of View

open access: yesMolecules
This work highlights the significant potential of marine toxins, particularly saxitoxin (STX) and its derivatives, in the exploration of novel pharmaceuticals.

Saxitoxin Poisoning in Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) Linked to Scavenging on Mass Mortality of Caribbean Sharpnose Puffer Fish (Canthigaster rostrata-Tetraodontidae)

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2019
Fish within the family Tetraodontidae are potential sources of both endogenous tetrodotoxins (TTXs) and dietary derived saxitoxins (STXs). Ingestion of fish tissues containing these toxins by other vertebrates can lead to severe illness and death.

Integrative Monitoring of Marine and Freshwater Harmful Algae in Washington State for Public Health Protection

open access: yesToxins, 2015
The more frequent occurrence of both marine and freshwater toxic algal blooms and recent problems with new toxic events have increased the risk for illness and negatively impacted sustainable public access to safe shellfish and recreational waters in ...

Cyanobacterial occurrence and detection of microcystins and saxitoxins in reservoirs of the Brazilian semi-arid

open access: yesActa Limnologica Brasiliensia, 2015
Aim:The rapid spread of cyanobacteria in water sources and reservoirs has caused serious environmental damage and public health problems, and consists in a problem that challenges the institutions responsible for providing water to the population.

Impact of Environmental Factors on the Regulation of Cyanotoxin Production

open access: yesToxins, 2014
Cyanobacteria are capable of thriving in almost all environments. Recent changes in climatic conditions due to increased human activities favor the occurrence and severity of harmful cyanobacterial bloom all over the world. Knowledge of the regulation of

Production of antibodies for saxitoxin analysis and sensitivity analysis of anti-saxitoxin antiserum

open access: yesJournal of the Korea Academia-Industrial cooperation Society, 2012

Multiple Stressors at the Land-Sea Interface: Cyanotoxins at the Land-Sea Interface in the Southern California Bight

open access: yesToxins, 2017
Blooms of toxic cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems have received considerable attention in recent years, but their occurrence and potential importance at the land-sea interface has not been widely recognized.

Effects of Marine Toxins on the Reproduction and Early Stages Development of Aquatic Organisms

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2010
Marine organisms, and specially phytoplankton species, are able to produce a diverse array of toxic compounds that are not yet fully understood in terms of their main targets and biological function.

Occurrence of toxin-producing cyanobacteria blooms in a Brazilian semiarid reservoir

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
We report the occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms and the presence of cyanotoxins in water samples from the Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves reservoir (06° 08’ S and 37° 07’ W), located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the semiarid region of northeastern

Isolation and preliminary characterization of cyanobacteria strains from freshwaters of Greece

open access: yesOpen Life Sciences, 2014
Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (or CyanoHABs) represent one of the most conspicuous waterborne microbial hazards. The characterization of the bloom communities remains problematic because the cyanobacterial taxonomy of certain genera has not yet ...
