Paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins (PSPTs) are a class of neurotoxins most known for causing illness from consuming contaminated shellfish. These toxins are also present in freshwater systems with the concern that they contaminate drinking and ...

Paralytic shellfish toxins and ocean warming: bioaccumulation and ecotoxicological responses in jujvenile Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) [PDF]
Warmer seawater temperatures are expected to increase harmful algal blooms (HABs) occurrence, intensity, and distribution. Yet, the potential interactions between abiotic stressors and HABs are still poorly understood from ecological and seafood safety ...

Non-Traditional Vectors for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning
Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), due to saxitoxin and related compounds, typically results from the consumption of filter-feeding molluscan shellfish that concentrate toxins from marine dinoflagellates.

Effects of Marine Toxins on the Reproduction and Early Stages Development of Aquatic Organisms
Marine organisms, and specially phytoplankton species, are able to produce a diverse array of toxic compounds that are not yet fully understood in terms of their main targets and biological function.

Occurrence of toxin-producing cyanobacteria blooms in a Brazilian semiarid reservoir
We report the occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms and the presence of cyanotoxins in water samples from the Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves reservoir (06° 08’ S and 37° 07’ W), located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the semiarid region of northeastern

Isolation and preliminary characterization of cyanobacteria strains from freshwaters of Greece
Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (or CyanoHABs) represent one of the most conspicuous waterborne microbial hazards. The characterization of the bloom communities remains problematic because the cyanobacterial taxonomy of certain genera has not yet ...

Toxic Algae Contamination and Demand for Shellfish: A Case Study of Demand for Mussels in Montreal [PDF]
Toxic algae blooms are a worldwide phenomena, which appear to be increasing in frequency and severity. These natural events cause product contaminations that often have significant economic consequences, including supply interruptions due to closed ...

Production of antibodies for saxitoxin analysis and sensitivity analysis of anti-saxitoxin antiserum
