Generation of implant-type tissue-engineered cartilage from human embryonic stem cell-derived chondrocytes

open access: yesRegenerative Therapy
Introduction: Autologous cartilage transplantation has been applied clinically but its efficacy is limited by donor site morbidity, inter-donor variability, and high manufacturing costs. Primary chondrocytes also tend to dedifferentiate during expansion,

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Influence of Structure–Property Relationships of Polymeric Biomaterials for Engineering Multicellular Spheroids

open access: yesBioengineering
Two-dimensional cell culture systems lack the ability to replicate the complex, three-dimensional (3D) architecture and cellular microenvironments found in vivo.

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Biliary Injuries Repair Using Copolymeric Scaffold: A Systematic Review and In Vivo Experimental Study

open access: yesJournal of Functional Biomaterials
Background: Common bile duct (CBD) treatments are often associated with complications, limiting long-term efficacy. To overcome these issues, polymeric grafts have been suggested as promising alternatives, since they are highly customizable ...

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

MODULATING THE INNATE IMMUNE RESPONSE TO ELECTROSPUN SCAFFOLDS AND POLYMER DEGRADATIVE BYPRODUCTS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Implanted biomaterials often induce inflammation that frequently leads to the foreign body response, fibrosis, and the failure of the implant. Thus, it is important to evaluate how cells interact with materials to promote a more regenerative response. It
