Scavenger Receptors in Atherosclerosis [PDF]

open access: yesArteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, 2006
Atherosclerotic vascular disease arises as a consequence of the deposition and retention of serum lipoproteins in the artery wall. Macrophages in lesions have been shown to express ≥6 structurally different scavenger receptors for uptake of modified forms of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) that promote the cellular accumulation of cholesterol.

Scavenger receptor class B type I as a receptor for oxidized low density lipoprotein

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2001
Scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI) has been established as the primary mediator of the selective transfer of lipids from HDL to mammalian cells.

Scavenger Receptor C Mediates Phagocytosis of White Spot Syndrome Virus and Restricts Virus Proliferation in Shrimp

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2016
Scavenger receptors are an important class of pattern recognition receptors that play several important roles in host defense against pathogens. The class C scavenger receptors (SRCs) have only been identified in a few invertebrates, and their role in ...

Lipoprotein receptor interactions are not required for monocyte oxidation of LDL.

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1995
Upon activation, human peripheral blood monocytes and U937 cells oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL), converting it to a cytotoxin. The oxidized LDL loses its ability to interact specifically with the native LDL (apoB/E) receptor and becomes a ligand ...

The effects of exogenous lipid on THP-1 cells : an in vitro model of airway aspiration? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Chronic inflammatory diseases of the airways are associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) and aspiration events. The observation of lipid laden macrophages (LLM) within the airway may indicate aspiration secondary to GOR.

A Consensus Definitive Classification of Scavenger Receptors and Their Roles in Health and Disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Scavenger receptors constitute a large family of proteins that are structurally diverse and participate in a wide range of biological functions. These receptors are expressed predominantly by myeloid cells and recognize a diverse variety of ligands ...

Scavenger Receptors and Atherosclerosis

open access: yesBiological Research, 2000
Scavenger receptors were discovered as cell surface proteins capable of binding and internalization of modified lipoproteins. These receptors exhibit a broad ligand binding specificity including potential physiological and pathophysiological ligands other than modified lipoproteins.

Strength through diversity: how cancers thrive when clones cooperate

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Intratumor heterogeneity can offer direct benefits to the tumor through cooperation between different clones. In this review, Kuiken et al. discuss existing evidence for clonal cooperativity to identify overarching principles, and highlight how novel technological developments could address remaining open questions.
