Defining the role of αC helix interactions in the activation of the integrin αI domain

The FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
The α2I domain of the α2β1 integrin contains a distinctive αC helix and a conserved Arg288‐Glu318 ion pair that stabilizes the closed state of the domain. Disruption of this ion pair in the activated α2I variant unwinds the αC helix, which allows interaction with additional collagen‐binding sites increasing collagen binding.

GSK3α‐mediated regulation of the RNA demethylase fat mass and obesity‐associated protein (FTO) during murine spermatogenesis

FTO regulates mRNA stability and translational efficiency through its m6A‐demethylation activity. GSK3 functions as an upstream regulator of FTO, leading to its inhibition via phosphorylation. In male germ cells, FTO activity is kept in check by GSK3α.

Genome assembly of Elcysma westwoodi provides insights into host‐plant cyanogenic glucoside detoxification and chemical defence gene evolution

A chromosome‐level genome of Elcysma westwoodi was assembled. The genome encodes 272 detoxification‐related genes. A single‐copy bCAS was retained for cyanide detoxification. CYP405A and CYP332A were recruited into cyanogenic defence evolution. UGT33A retained a conserved GT‐B fold and catalytic domains.

Auxin response and PIN‐mediated transport in chlorophyte algae

Like multicellular plants, green algae respond to auxin and move it across their cells. However, their PIN‐like proteins do not act like plant auxin exporters, suggesting that basic auxin transport evolved early and specialized directional transport appeared later in plant evolution.

CP32, a novel anti‐oomycete cyclic peptide, interferes with cell‐wall deposition in Phytophthora infestans

The small cyclic peptide CP32 effectively inhibits Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of potato and tomato late blight. Combined biochemical and phenotypic analyses demonstrate that CP32 disrupts cell wall biosynthesis, a key process in pathogen infection, resulting in a marked reduction of disease symptoms in plants.
