Biomimetic chitosan scaffolds with long-term controlled release of nerve growth factor repairs 20-mm-long sciatic nerve defects in rats

open access: yesNeural Regeneration Research, 2022
Although autogenous nerve transplantation is the gold standard for treating peripheral nerve defects of considerable length, it still has some shortcomings, such as insufficient donors and secondary injury.

Large schwannoma of the sciatic nerve [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ Case Reports, 2016
A 40-year-old woman was referred with an 8-month history of fullness of the right posterior thigh. This was associated with pain, primarily on sitting and occasional radicular pain down the ipsilateral leg. Acute- and late-phase matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 activity is comparable in female and male rats after peripheral nerve injury. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND:In the peripheral nerve, pro-inflammatory matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 performs essential functions in the acute response to injury. Whether MMP-9 activity contributes to late-phase injury or whether MMP-9 expression or activity after ...

Cement burn of the sciatic nerve [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 1992
We present the case of a 63-year-old woman who sustained an acrylic cement burn of the sciatic nerve at hip replacement. She was treated by resection of the damaged segment and grafting. Electron microscopy showed that the nerve was nearly normal 1 cm from the cement margin indicating that this is a safe level for resection.
