α-Scorpion toxins

1997
Abstract α-Toxins can be considered as the cause of the scorpion venom toxicity for mammals and particularly human beings, in the ‘Old World’ (Miranda et al. 1970). For example, 90 per cent of the toxicity for the mouse in the venom of Androctonus australis from North Africa is due to only 2 per cent of the weight of the crude venom. The

The insecticidal potential of scorpion β-toxins

Toxicon, 2007
Voltage-gated sodium channels are a major target for toxins and insecticides due to their central role in excitability, but due to the conservation of these channels in Animalia most insecticides do not distinguish between those of insects and mammals, thereby imposing risks to humans and livestock.

Adaptive Evolution of Scorpion Sodium Channel Toxins

Journal of Molecular Evolution, 2004
Gene duplication followed by positive Darwinian selection is an important evolutionary event at the molecular level, by which a gene can gain new functions. Such an event might have occurred in the evolution of scorpion sodium channel toxin genes (alpha- and beta-groups).

Scorpion Toxins Affecting Insects

1992
Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the scorpion toxins affecting insects. The scorpion toxins specific for insects are divided into two different categories—contraction-inducing toxins, which causes rapid excitatory contraction paralysis in Sarcophaga argyrostoma fly larvae, and depressant toxins, which induces a slow depressant ...

Respiratory arrhythmias produced by purified scorpion toxin

Toxicon, 1973
Abstract Bilateral section of vagi nerves and denervation of carotid bodies prevented the gasping, ataxic and periodic respirations produced by purified scorpion toxin ( Tityus serrulatus ) in the rat. The apnea recorded in intact rats after toxin injection was of long duration in comparison with that observed in denervated animals.

The antigenic structure of a scorpion toxin

Molecular Immunology, 1989
Scorpion toxins constitute a family of homologous proteins that exert potent pharmacological effects on ion channels. These proteins are immunogenic and constitute a good model for investigation of the molecular basis of antigenicity. In the first part of this article we summarize the results we have obtained in recent years concerning the location of ...

SCORPION TOXIN‐INDUCED CATECHOLAMINE RELEASE FROM SYNAPTOSOMES

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1974
Abstract— A toxin purified from crude venom of the scorpion L. quinquestriatus releases [3H]norepinephrine from synaptosomes prepared from rat brain. The toxin‐induced release is dependent on duration of exposure and concentration of toxin in the medium.

Scorpion toxins: Tools for studying K+ channels

Toxicon, 1998
Over the last period of time, a large number of scorpion toxins have been characterized. These peptidyl inhibitors of K+ channels have been very useful as probes for determining the molecular architecture of these channels, for purifying channels from native tissue and determining their subunit composition, for developing the pharmacology of K ...

β-Scorpion toxins

1997
Abstract β-Toxins are responsible for the life hazard constituted, in Central and South America, by scorpion stings. They are qualitatively and quantitatively the most important polypeptides of the venom. They are made of one single polypeptide chain of 60 to 66 amino acid residues crosslinked by four disulfide bridges (Possani et al ...
