The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

On Second-Order Necessary Conditions for Broken Extremals [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Optimization Theory and Applications, 2014
The author gives simple proofs for second-order necessary conditions for extended weak minima for extremals with discontinuous controls in optimal control problems with initial-final state equality, inequality constraints, and running mixed state control equality constraints given by smooth functions.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Intelligent control system for the electric vehicle heat pump air conditioner based on machine learning

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research, 2023
In order to break through the existing battery technology of electric vehicles, this paper proposes to use heat pump air conditioning instead of the original PTC heating system potential.

CONDITIONED REINFORCEMENT AND DISCRIMINATION IN SECOND‐ORDER SCHEDULES [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1978
Pigeons were exposed to multiple second‐order schedules in which responding on the “main key” was reinforced according to either a variable‐interval or fixed‐interval schedule by production of a brief stimulus on the “brief‐stimulus key”. A response was required to the brief stimulus during its fourth (final) presentation to produce food; responses to ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Electrophysiological correlates of associative learning in smokers: a higher-order conditioning experiment

open access: yesBMC Neuroscience, 2012
Background Classical conditioning has been suggested to play an important role in the development, maintenance, and relapse of tobacco smoking. Several studies have shown that initially neutral stimuli that are directly paired with smoking are able to ...
