Second language learning of depiction in a different modality: The case of sign language acquisition

open access: yesFrontiers in Communication, 2023
This study investigated the acquisition of depicting signs (DS) among students learning a signed language as their second-modality and second-language (M2L2) language. Depicting signs, broadly described, illustrate actions and states.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Gender-Related Differences in Collaborative Learning in a 3D Virtual Reality Environment by Elementary School Students

open access: yesEducational Technology & Society, 2018
This study aimed to understand how children collaborated to create their own stories in a 3D virtual reality (VR) environment and to explore whether there were any gender-related differences in this learning setting.

國際華語教材跨文化詞彙分析: 以《中學生探世界》為例 The Intercultural Vocabulary and Awareness of an International Chinese Teaching Material: A Case Study

open access: yesJournal of Curriculum Studies, 2022

EMBODIMENT IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper aims to elaborate the implementation of Embodiment as one of the concept of Cognitive Linguistics in second language learning and teaching. Cognitive Linguistics is simply pointed that language is all about meaning. It views the learner as a

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Second language processing: when are first and second languages processed similarly?

open access: yesSecond Language Research, 2008
In this article we investigate the effects of first language (L1) on second language (L2) neural processing for two grammatical constructions (verbal domain dependency and grammatical gender), focusing on the event-related potential P600 effect, which has been found in both L1 and L2 processing.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

A Survey on Postsecondary Korean Language Programs in the United States [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages, 2017
Students of the less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) retain higher motivation in learning (Bao & Lee, 2012; Brown, 2009; Liu & Shibata, 2008; Murphy, Back, & Garrett-Rucks, 2009; Nunn, 2013), but it is uncertain to what extent the LCTL programs are ...
