Nuclear factor κB-inducing kinase activation as a mechanism of pancreatic β cell failure in obesity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) pathway is a master regulator of inflammatory processes and is implicated in insulin resistance and pancreatic β cell dysfunction in the metabolic syndrome.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Secretory pathway antagonism by calicivirus homologues of Norwalk virus nonstructural protein p22 is restricted to noroviruses

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2012
Background Our previous report that the Norwalk virus nonstructural protein p22 is an antagonist of the cellular secretory pathway suggests a new aspect of norovirus/host interaction.

Influence of the purification of human adult pancreatic islets on insulin secretion [PDF]

open access: yesVojnosanitetski Pregled, 2010
Background/Aim. The most effective method for human adult pancreatic islets purification is density-gradient centrifugation. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of non-automated purification on preservation of functional capacity of human ...

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

An integrated approach to infer cross-talks between intracellular protein transport and signaling pathways

open access: yesBMC Bioinformatics, 2018
Background The endomembrane system, known as secretory pathway, is responsible for the synthesis and transport of protein molecules in cells. Therefore, genes involved in the secretory pathway are essential for the cellular development and function ...

Targeting p38α in cancer: challenges, opportunities, and emerging strategies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
p38α normally regulates cellular stress responses and homeostasis and suppresses malignant transformation. In cancer, however, p38α is co‐opted to drive context‐dependent proliferation and dissemination. p38α also supports key functions in cells of the tumor microenvironment, including fibroblasts, myeloid cells, and T lymphocytes.

An ancestral secretory apparatus in the protozoan parasite Giardia intestinalis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The protozoan parasite Giardia intestinalis belongs to one of the earliest diverged eukaryotic lineages. This is also reflected in a simple intracellular organization, as Giardia lacks common subcellular compartments such as mitochondria, peroxisomes ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

ER exit in physiology and disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences
The biosynthetic secretory pathway is comprised of multiple steps, modifications and interactions that form a highly precise pathway of protein trafficking and secretion, that is essential for eukaryotic life.
