An Empirical Analysis of Energy Demand in Namibia [PDF]

open access: yes
Using a unique database of end-user local energy data and the recently developed Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to cointegration, we estimate the long-run elasticities of the Namibian energy demand function at both ...

Investigating the Effect of Stratospheric Radiation on Seed Germination and Growth [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Three seed types: bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), corn (Zea mays) and radish (Raphanus sativus) were flown in a high altitude weather balloon into the mid-stratosphere to investigate the effects of high altitude radiation on germination success and seedling ...

TOMM20 as a driver of cancer aggressiveness via oxidative phosphorylation, maintenance of a reduced state, and resistance to apoptosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TOMM20 increases cancer aggressiveness by maintaining a reduced state with increased NADH and NADPH levels, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and apoptosis resistance while reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Conversely, CRISPR‐Cas9 knockdown of TOMM20 alters these cancer‐aggressive traits.

OECD Energy Demand: Modelling Underlying Energy Demand Trends using the Structural Time Series Model [PDF]

open access: yes
Aggregate energy demand functions for 17 OECD countries are estimated with data for 1960-2003 using the Structural Time Series Model (STSM) thus allowing for a stochastic Underlying Energy Demand Trend (UEDT).

Fast tuneable InGaAsP DBR laser using quantum-confined stark-effect-induced refractive index change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We report a monolithically integrated InGaAsP DBR ridge waveguide laser that uses the quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE) to achieve fast tuning response.

Transcriptome‐wide analysis of circRNA and RBP profiles and their molecular relevance for GBM

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CircRNAs are differentially expressed in glioblastoma primary tumors and might serve as therapeutic targets and diagnostic markers. The investigation of circRNA and RNA‐binding proteins (RBPs) interactions shows that distinct RBPs play a role in circRNA biogenesis and function.

Methods for Improving the Germination of Rhodotypos scandens (Thunb.) Makino Seeds through Endocarp Removal

open access: yesPlants
Rhodotypos scandens (Thunb.) Makino is known to have a seed dispersal that is thick and stony (endocarp + seeds) and has potential as a landscaping tree seed.

US Residential Energy Demand and Energy Efficiency: A Stochastic Demand Frontier Approach [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper estimates a US ‘frontier’ residential aggregate energy demand function using panel data for 48 ‘states’ over the period 1995 to 2006 using stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). Utilizing an econometric energy demand model, the (in) efficiency of

Cold Radiofrequency Plasma Treatment Modifies Wettability and Germination Speed of Plant Seeds

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2012
We report the possibility to modify the wetting properties of the surfaces of a diversity of seeds including: lentils (Lens culinaris), beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and wheat (Triticum, species C9) by cold radiofrequency air plasma treatment.

Targeting the MDM2‐MDM4 interaction interface reveals an otherwise therapeutically active wild‐type p53 in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study investigates an alternative approach to reactivating the oncosuppressor p53 in cancer. A short peptide targeting the association of the two p53 inhibitors, MDM2 and MDM4, induces an otherwise therapeutically active p53 with unique features that promote cell death and potentially reduce toxicity towards proliferating nontumor cells.
