Antioxidant characterization of fruits of the Family Cactaceae: Hylocereus undatus, Selenicereus megalanthus, and Hylocereus polyrhizus

open access: hybridFood Science and Technology
In this study, the antioxidant capacity of the peel and pulp of three Pitaya species was investigated: Hylocereus undatus, Selenicereus megalanthus, and Hylocereus polyrhizus. The methods used include the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method, the thiobarbituric acid reactivity assay (TBARS) for inhibition of lipid peroxidation,

Low- and High-Temperature Tolerance and Acclimation for Chlorenchyma versus Meristem of the Cultivated Cacti Nopalea cochenillifera, Opuntia robusta, and Selenicereus megalanthus [PDF]

open access: hybridJournal of Botany, Volume 2011, Issue 1, 2011., 2011
Dividing meristematic cells are thought to be more sensitive to extreme temperatures compared to other tissues, such as chlorenchyma. This was examined for low and high temperatures for three widely cultivated cacti: Nopalea cochenillifera, Opuntia robusta, and Selenicereus megalanthus.

Modified compact fluorescent lamps improve light‐induced off‐season floral stimulation in dragon fruit farming

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 9, Issue 5, Page 2390-2401, May 2021., 2021
The study first surveyed on dragon fruit farmers on measures to stimulate flowering in commercial dragon fruit farming in three provinces of Vietnam. We then modified emission spectra of Compact Fluorescent Lamps and used them in field experiments. One improved low‐power CFL bulb showed flowering induction capability comparable to the incandescent bulb.
