Pictorial Socratic dialogue and conceptual change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Counter-examples used in a Socratic dialogue aim to provoke reflection to effect conceptual changes. However, natural language forms of Socratic dialogues have their limitations.

Fourier transform infrared cell for surface studies at controlled temperatures and in controlled atmospheres with time resolution and spatial resolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
A new micro-Fourier transform infrared cell has been constructed and evaluated using (i) the transformation of aurichalcite crystals at 298-475 K, (ii) the adsorption/desorption of pyridine on a Cu2O/ZnO junction, and (iii) the adsorption of CO on Pt ...

Self Care : Self management / Self testing / Self awareness

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...

Creating closed-loop economies through reuse, recycling and bioproduct-based economic development: site assessment for Southern Willamette River Valley [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
29 p.This report assesses opportunities for stimulating closed-loop economic development in the Southern Willamette Valley region based on the reuse and recycling of: (1) materials in the municipality, (2) agricultural and forestry waste streams, as well

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Isolation, Characterization, and Antioxidant Activity Evaluation of a Fucoidan from an Enzymatic Digest of the Edible Seaweed, Hizikia fusiforme

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2020
The previous study suggested that the sulfated polysaccharides from Hizikia fusiforme (HFPS) possess strong antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study is to isolate fucoidan from HFPS and to investigate its antioxidant activity. A fucoidan (HFPS-F4)

The Port Norfolk Project: Improved Raster Navigation Products From High Resolution Source Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
With increasing capabilities in technology, modern hydrographic surveys are comprised of similarly increasing amounts of data, only a minute fraction of which is currently available in the nautical charts produced by the NOAA Office of Coast Survey (OCS).

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Effect of Lateral Body Position on Heart Rate Variability in Patients with Sleep Apnea Syndrome

open access: yesJournal of Arrhythmia, 2007
Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) can exacerbate cardiovascular disease by augmenting activity of the sympathetic nervous system. One method of treating SAS is via modulation of body posture.
