Carcinogenesis and Metastasis: Focus on TRPV1-Positive Neurons and Immune Cells

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2023
Both sensory neurons and immune cells, albeit at markedly different levels, express the vanilloid (capsaicin) receptor, Transient Receptor Potential, Vanilloid-1 (TRPV1).

Sensory Mechanisms in Mammalian Touch Receptor Cells [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2011
The sense of touch is critical for hand dexterity that allows mammals to recognize and grasp objects. Different qualities of touch are encoded by sensory neurons with distinct properties. Shapes and curvature are encoded by Merkel cell-neurite complexes, which mediate slowly adapting type I (SAI) responses. Merkel cells, which cluster in fingertips and

Metabolic Control of Sensory Neuron Survival by the p75 Neurotrophin Receptor in Schwann Cells [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Neuroscience, 2021
We report that the neurotrophin receptor p75 contributes to sensory neuron survival through the regulation of cholesterol metabolism in Schwann cells. Selective deletion of p75 in mouse Schwann cells of either sex resulted in a 30% loss of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons and diminished thermal sensitivity.

Gustatory sensory cells express a receptor responsive to protein breakdown products (GPR92) [PDF]

open access: yesHistochemistry and Cell Biology, 2013
The ingestion of dietary protein is of vital importance for the maintenance of fundamental physiological processes. The taste modality umami, with its prototype stimulus, glutamate, is considered to signal the protein content of food. Umami was thought to be mediated by the heterodimeric amino acid receptor, T1R1 + T1R3.

Intrinsic frequency response patterns in mechano-sensory neurons of the leech

open access: yesBiology Open, 2017
Animals employ mechano-sensory systems to detect and explore their environment. Mechano-sensation encompasses stimuli such as constant pressure, surface movement or vibrations at various intensities that need to be segregated in the central nervous ...

L-Amino Acids Elicit Diverse Response Patterns in Taste Sensory Cells: A Role for Multiple Receptors. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Umami, the fifth basic taste, is elicited by the L-amino acid, glutamate. A unique characteristic of umami taste is the response potentiation by 5' ribonucleotide monophosphates, which are also capable of eliciting an umami taste.

SARS-CoV-2 receptor and entry genes are expressed by sustentacular cells in the human olfactory neuroepithelium

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2020
Various reports indicate an association between COVID-19 and anosmia, suggesting an infection of the olfactory sensory epithelium, and thus a possible direct virus access to the brain.

Tachykinins stimulate a subset of mouse taste cells. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The tachykinins substance P (SP) and neurokinin A (NKA) are present in nociceptive sensory fibers expressing transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily V, member 1 (TRPV1).

Respiratory virus infection up-regulates TRPV1, TRPA1 and ASICS3 receptors on airway cells.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Receptors implicated in cough hypersensitivity are transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), transient receptor potential cation channel, Subfamily A, Member 1 (TRPA1) and acid sensing ion channel receptor 3 (ASIC3).
