RAD50 missense variants differentially affect the DNA damage response and mitotic progression

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
RAD50 incorporates into the MRN complex and initiates the DNA damage response. Furthermore, RAD50 promotes mitotic progression. RAD50 missense variants capable of forming an MRN complex supported the DNA damage response and mitotic features to different extents in complementation experiments, indicating these functions are separable and might impact ...

Comparative genomics of the miniature wasp and pest control agent Trichogramma pretiosum

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2018
Background Trichogrammatids are minute parasitoid wasps that develop within other insect eggs. They are less than half a millimeter long, smaller than some protozoans.

Hiding Sequences

open access: yes2007 IEEE 23rd International Conference on Data Engineering Workshop, 2007
The process of discovering relevant patterns holding in a database, was first indicated as a threat to database security by O' Leary. Since then, many different approaches for knowledge hiding have emerged over the years, mainly in the context of association rules and frequent itemsets mining. Following many real-world data and applications demands, in

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Length distribution of sequencing by synthesis: fixed flow cycle model

open access: yes, 2014
Sequencing by synthesis is the underlying technology for many next-generation DNA sequencing platforms. We developed a new model, the fixed flow cycle model, to derive the distributions of sequence length for a given number of flow cycles under the ...

Biophysical analysis of angiotensin II and amyloid‐β cross‐interaction in aggregation and membrane disruption

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Angiotensin II (AngII), a neuropeptide, interacts with amyloid‐β (Aβ), a key player in Alzheimer's disease. This study reveals that AngII reduces Aβ aggregation and membrane disruption in vitro. Biophysical assays and molecular modeling suggest AngII binds disordered Aβ forms, potentially modulating early amyloidogenic events and contributing to ...

Identification of allele-specific KIV-2 repeats and impact on Lp(a) measurements for cardiovascular disease risk

open access: yesBMC Medical Genomics
The abundance of Lp(a) protein holds significant implications for the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is directly impacted by the copy number (CN) of KIV-2, a 5.5 kbp sub-region.

GRIPT: a novel case-control analysis method for Mendelian disease gene discovery

open access: yesGenome Biology, 2018
Despite rapid progress of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, the disease-causing genes underpinning about half of all Mendelian diseases remain elusive.

Sequencing fiscal decentralization [PDF]

open access: yes
While there is extensive knowledge about how to design fiscal decentralization policies, considerably less is understood about how a decentralization program should be sequenced and implemented. Countries embarking on decentralization often struggle with
