Using dimension reduction to improve outbreak predictability of multistrain diseases [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
Multistrain diseases have multiple distinct coexisting serotypes (strains). For some diseases, such as dengue fever, the serotypes interact by antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), in which infection with a single serotype is asymptomatic, but contact with a second serotype leads to higher viral load and greater infectivity.

Reduction in respiratory mortality not associated with influenza in Russia: effect of the introduction of pneumococcal vaccination (PCV13), or improvement in care? [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Background. Pneumococcal vaccination (PCV13) for children (as well as older adults) in Russia was introduced in 2014, with no prior PCV7 use. While pneumonia hospitalization rates, both in children and adults did not decrease in the following years, respiratory mortality rates did decline with time.

Capsular Serotyping of Streptococcus pneumoniae by Latex Agglutination

open access: yesJournal of Visualized Experiments, 2014
Latex agglutination reagents are widely used in microbial diagnosis, identification and serotyping. Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality world-wide.

PSMD14 Stabilizes SLC7A11 to Ameliorate Glucocorticoid‐Induced Osteoporosis by Suppressing Osteocyte Ferroptosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Glucocorticoid‐induced osteoporosis (GIOP) triggers osteocyte ferroptosis via SLC7A11 degradation. PSMD14 stabilizes SLC7A11 by counteracting glucocorticoid‐driven ubiquitination, preserving cystine uptake and glutathione synthesis. AAV‐mediated PSMD14 delivery or its agonist Pantethine rescues osteocyte survival and bone loss in GIOP mice.

Estimating the Attack Ratio of Dengue Epidemics under Time-varying Force of Infection using Aggregated Notification Data [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
Quantifying the attack ratio of disease is key to epidemiological inference and Public Health planning. For multi-serotype pathogens, however, different levels of serotype-specific immunity make it difficult to assess the population at risk. In this paper we propose a Bayesian method for estimation of the attack ratio of an epidemic and the initial ...

Additional Rhinovirus Serotypes

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1964
SummaryFifty-two rhinovirus strains were isolated from 672 cases of acute respiratory illness in children and adults and 4 strains were recovered from well controls. Respiratory disease cases among adults which yielded a rhinovirus were nearly all upper respiratory illness (common cold) whereas the cases among children often showed lower respiratory ...

Cardiomyocyte‐Enriched USP20 Ameliorates Pathological Cardiac Hypertrophy by Targeting STAT3 Deubiquitination

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Cardiomyocyte‐enriched USP20 regulates the K63‐linked ubiquitination of STAT3, and the cardiomyocyte‐specific USP20‐STAT3‐CARM1 axis exerts a protective role in cardiac hypertrophy. Targeting USP20 through cardiac‐specific gene therapy presents a promising strategy for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy.

Single-Reaction, Multiplex, Real-Time RT-PCR for the Detection, Quantitation, and Serotyping of Dengue Viruses

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2013
Background Dengue fever results from infection with one or more of four different serotypes of dengue virus (DENV). Despite the widespread nature of this infection, available molecular diagnostics have significant limitations.

Fourth Human Parechovirus Serotype [PDF]

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2006
We identified a novel human parechovirus (HPeV) type (K251176-02) from a neonate with fever. Analysis of the complete genome showed K251176-02 to be a new HPeV genotype. Since K251176-02 could not be neutralized with antibodies against known HPeV serotypes 1-3, it should be classified as a fourth HPeV serotype.

Gelsolin's Protective Role in MASH through F‐Actin Regulation and P53 Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Gelsolin (GSN) maintains liver metabolic homeostasis by promoting MDM2‐mediated P53 degradation and inhibiting F‐actin/Yes‐associated protein (YAP) overactivation. Loss of GSN impairs P53 degradation, increases lipid deposition, and enhances YAP‐driven fibrosis and inflammation in metabolic‐associated steatohepatitis.
