Severity outweighs pyrodiversity in shaping avian and bat species distributions following an oak woodland megafire

open access: yesEcosphere
Anthropogenic pressures have altered fire regimes across the western United States. These altered fire regimes, and the megafires they often produce, threaten ecologically and economically critical ecosystems and biodiversity across this region.

Visceral obesity anthropometric indicators as predictors of acute pancreatitis severity

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
BackgroundAcute pancreatitis (AP) severity assessment upon admission is crucial for prognosis, yet existing clinical scoring systems have limitations like delayed results, complexity, or low sensitivity.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Bat response to differing fire severity in mixed-conifer forest California, USA

open access: yes, 2013
Wildlife response to natural disturbances such as fire is of conservation concern to managers, policy makers, and scientists, yet information is scant beyond a few well-studied groups (e.g., birds, small mammals).

Influence of age, severity of infection, and co-infection on the duration of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) shedding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
RSV is the most important viral cause of pneumonia and bronchiolitis in children worldwide and has been associated with significant disease burden. With the renewed interest in RSV vaccines, we provide realistic estimates on duration, and influencing ...

Effect of Tissue Eosinophilia on the Disease Outcome of Pediatric With Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

open access: yesJGH Open
Background It seems that the presence of tissue eosinophils in IBD patients can provide more information to predict the prognosis and outcome of the disease, especially in children. However, there is very limited evidence in this regard.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Discrete distributions when modeling the disability severity score of motor victims [PDF]

open access: yes
Many European states apply score systems to evaluate the disability severity of non-fatal motor victims under the law of third-party liability. The score is a non-negative integer with an upper bound at 100 that increases with severity.

Severity-Based Prioritized Processing of Packets with Application in VANETs

open access: yes, 2019
To fully realize the potential of vehicular networks, several obstacles and challenges need to be addressed. Chief among the obstacles are strict QoS requirements of applications and differentiated service requirements in different situations.

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.
