Case report: Kinetics of viral load, immunoglobulins, and cytokines in a fatal case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus

open access: yesFrontiers in Virology
A fatal case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) was detected in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa, in April 2023. To elucidate the mechanisms involved in this outcome, the kinetics of viral load, immunoglobulins, and cytokines were assessed using

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

A clinical study correlating the serum levels of lactate dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein, and lipase with the severity and related complications of acute pancreatitis

open access: yesMuller Journal of Medical Sciences and Research
Background: In addition to Ranson’s criteria, computed tomography severity index (CTSI), and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, the presence of local or systemic complications can predict severe acute pancreatitis (AP).

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The clinical value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio for predicting the severity of patients with autoimmune encephalitis

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology
BackgroundThe systemic inflammation index (SII), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are inflammatory markers in peripheral blood, which have been proven to be associated with ...
