Sex hormone-binding globulin in osteoporosis
Joint Bone Spine, 2010Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a plasma glycoprotein that binds with high affinity to sex steroids, most notably 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone, testosterone, and 17beta-estradiol, thereby regulating their bioavailability and access to target cells. SHBG modulates the sex-steroid signaling system by binding to a specific membrane receptor (SHBG-R).

Sex-Hormone-Binding Globulin is an Oestrogen Amplifier
Nature, 1972WE suggest a novel biological role for a specific plasma-binding protein in the regulation of oestrogen and androgen activity in man. The biological activity of oestradiol and testosterone, as with other steroids1, is probably exerted by the unbound fraction in plasma; this is only 1–3% of the total concentration.

Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2021
Over the past decade, there have been important breakthroughs in our understanding of the regulation and function of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). A recent genome-wide association and Mendelian randomization study has provided new insights at the population level.

Effects of oestradiol on sex hormone binding globulin
Acta Endocrinologica, 1982Abstract. Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels were studied for possible effects of oestradiol-17β on SHBG. No change in SHBG plasma was recorded during normal menstrual cycles or during treatment with oestradiol-17β to menopausal women. However, gonadotrophin treatment to amenorrhoeic women to induce ovulation resulted in high oestradiol ...

Sex Hormone Binding Globulin in Clinical Perspective
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 1987The plasma steroid‐binding proteins play a fundamental role in the modification and delivery of the steroid “signal” to its target tissue. While their precise function requires further evaluation, the measurement of these proteins, particularly of SHBG, provides clinically useful information. This article reviews the current theories of sex steroid ...

Sex Hormone Binding Globulin in Carcinoma of the Prostate
British Journal of Urology, 1977Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) was measured in 130 patients with carcinoma of the prostate. Its level is raised in patients treated with oestrogen and it is possible that this may be of prognostic significance. The possible relevance of SHBG in oestrogen-treated patients is discussed.

Clinical Endocrinology, 1974
A review was made to understand how plasma binding protein might influence sex-hormone action in target tissues. Steroids are predominately bound to plasma proteins and only unbound steroids enter the cells. Sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) binds to both the main circulating steroid T and E2 but changes in SHBG concentrations exert significant ...

Dexamethasone suppresses sex-hormone binding globulin
Fertility and Sterility, 1988Dexamethasone suppression (DEX-S) for 14 days has been used to determine the probable source of androgen excess. The exact mechanism(s) of DEX-S is still unclear. The authors postulated that dexamethasone (DEX) inhibits either the synthesis or secretion of sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG). To examine this hypothesis, 14 women with polycystic ovarian

Sex hormone-binding globulin in gestational diabetes
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 2000Insulin is an important regulator of serum sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) concentration which works by inhibiting its production in hepatocytes. Low SHBG level is associated with increased insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. Our purpose was to compare maternal serum SHBG level between normal and gestational diabetic pregnant women and to ...

Sex hormone binding globulin in breast cancer
La Ricerca in Clinica e in Laboratorio, 1980Using a binding assay for sex hormone binding globulin, a Japanese group showed that they could select breast cancer patients more likely to be responsive to endocrine therapy, i.e. oestrogen receptor positive patients, by an increase in oestrogen binding capacity of the protein.
