Technical Transition of Earth Structures for Shinkansen
The paper describes the technical transition of earth structures for the super express known as the Shinkansen. To ensure the safe running of Shinkansen, the earth structures needed to be adequately designed and constructed with consideration of cost effectiveness and high stability.

Seismic performance evaluation of a century‐old RC columns for railway's structural concrete
Abstract Since the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 in Japan, reinforced concrete (RC) has been adopted for railway bridge piers, and some of these structures, now over 100 years old, continue to support transportation in the capital city of Tokyo. Evaluating the seismic performance of these few remaining RC structures has become an urgent issue. Because

Voltage fluctuation compensator for Shinkansen
AbstractIn AC electric railways, three‐phase voltage is changed into the single‐phase circuit of two circuits with the Scott‐connected transformer. If unbalancing of the load between single‐phase circuits becomes large, voltage fluctuation becomes large on the three‐phase side.

Abstract Female reproductive fitness has been clearly shown to be determined in part by a trade‐off between offspring size and number, and the corresponding performance of the offspring. The performance of offspring and corresponding reproductive fitness may vary in relation to changes in environmental conditions, such as food availability.

Abstract Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is particularly useful for linear and spatially extensive infrastructure systems such as railway networks. To enable the effective use of DAS in earthquake early warning and disaster response applications, it is essential to understand its performance under strong‐motion conditions.

FUGITIVE KINSHIPS: Imperial Legacies, Wayward Acts, and Queer Bonds among Filipino Migrants in Japan
ABSTRACT Like countless other immigrants in the Global North, many Filipinos in Japan have relied on kinship ties to citizens—descent and marriage—to become lawful residents. The hinging of mobility on family ties, however, has yielded a messy by‐product: fugitive kinships—bonds formed outside the narrow juridical definitions of family, typically ...
