Major sepsis study confirms back to basics approach
In 2001 Rivers et al. published a landmark study in the New England Journal of Medicine showing that in a single centre, involving patients presenting to an emergency department with severe sepsis and septic shock, an early goal-directed therapy (EGDT ...

The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Acute kidney injury is associated with a decrease in cortical renal perfusion during septic shock
Background Renal perfusion status remains poorly studied at the bedside during septic shock. We sought to measure cortical renal perfusion in patients with septic shock during their first 3 days of care using renal contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS ...

In normal (nontolerant) cells, CD14 is crucial for both LPS uptake and LPS signaling. In LPS‐tolerant cells, in which LPS‐induced TNF‐α and IFN‐β production is suppressed, there is a dramatic increase in surface CD14 expression. The overexpressed CD14 in LPS‐tolerant cells is responsible for the enhanced LPS uptake without inducing pro‐inflammatory ...

Background. Paediatric septic shock is a subset of sepsis associated with high mortality. Implementing the existing international Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines 2012 (SSCG) have contributed to reduction of mortality in many places but these have ...

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

Novel potential therapies for septic shock
Sepsis is the systemic inflammatory response syndrome secondary to a local infection. Septic shock, the severe complication of sepsis associated with refractory hypotension, is frequently a near-fatal condition requiring prompt diagnosis and management ...

Effect of terahertz irradiation on DNA damage repair in living cells
We investigated the effect of terahertz (THz) wave irradiation on DNA double‐strand break (DSB) repair in living cells. We found that THz irradiation enhanced DSB repair at specific frequencies, whereas heat treatment inhibited it, indicating that this effect is nonthermal and frequency‐specific.
