Circulating Sialyl Lewisa, Sialyl LewisX, and Sialyl Tn Antigens in Patients with Diffuse Type of Gastric Cancer

open access: yesCirculating Sialyl Lewisa, Sialyl LewisX, and Sialyl Tn Antigens in Patients with Diffuse Type of Gastric Cancer
The aim of this study was to clarify whether or not preoperative serum levels of sialyl Lewisa (CA19-9), sialyl LewisX (SLX), and sialyl Tn (STN) antigens are predictors for diffuse type gastric cancer. Eighty-two patients with diffuse type and 96 patients with intestinal type cancers were studied.

Elucidating the Functions of the Sialylation Pathway in Drosophila melanogaster

open access: yes, 2012
Sialylation is an important carbohydrate modification of glycoconjugates, which introduces sialic acids (SA). The relatively large nine-carbon, negatively charged sugars are typically located at the termini of carbohydrate chains.

Posttranslational sialylation and its impact on neutrophil recruitment

open access: yes
Neutrophils are essential components of the innate immune system, playing a critical role in responding to infections and inflammation. Their recruitment from blood circulation to affected tissues follows a well-coordinated multistep adhesion and ...

Beyond sialylation

open access: yes
Defects in sialic acid metabolism disrupt the sialylation of glycoproteins and glycolipids, contributing to a spectrum of diseases, including GNE myopathy (GNEM). This rare disorder is caused by mutations in the GNE gene that encodes for a bifunctional enzyme required for sialic acid biosynthesis, resulting in progressive muscle atrophy and weakness ...
