As thymocytes mature, their cell-surface proteins change both in terms of which proteins are present and in the structure of the proteins present. Moody et al. investigated how changes in glycosylation of the CD8 cell-surface glycoprotein of thymocytes influence its interaction with major histocompatibility complex ...

Sialylation and sialyltransferase in insects
Glycoconjugate Journal, 2018Sialic acids are negatively charged nine carbon monosaccharides located terminally on glycoproteins and glycolipids that control cellular physiological processes. Sialylation is a post translational modification (ptm) regulated by enzymes and has been studied in prokaryotes including bacteria, dueterostomes including vertebrates, Cephalochordates ...

The discovery, biology, and drug development of sialyl Lea and sialyl Lex
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2004The discoveries of sialylated, fucosylated lacto-, and neolacto-type carbohydrate structures were accomplished with the aid of analytical methods and monoclonal antibodies such as the immunostaining of thin layer chromatograms. Based on the use of such antibodies, these structures, notably sialyl Le(a) and sialyl Le(x), were demonstrated to be highly ...

Studies on the sialylation of galactoses with different C-5 modified sialyl donors
Carbohydrate Research, 2012Synthetic sialylated glycans provide useful tools to study carbohydrate-mediated biological recognition; however chemical sialylation is the most challenging practice in preparative carbohydrate chemistry, which is often associated with low yields and poor stereoselectivity.

Sialyl-Lewis x and Sialyl-Lewis a are associated with MUC1 in human endometrium
Glycoconjugate Journal, 1996Endometrial epithelial cells express MUC1 with increased abundance in the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle, when embryo implantation occurs. MUC1 is associated with the apical surface of epithelial cells and is also secreted, being detectable in uterine fluid at elevated levels in the implantation phase.

Studies on the inhibition of sialyl- and galactosyltransferases
Glycoconjugate Journal, 1997The inhibition of the alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase from rat liver, the alpha-2,3-sialyltransferase from porcine submandibular gland and of the galactosyltransferase from human milk were studied using monosaccharide-, nucleoside- and nucleotide-derivatives of their naturally occurring donor substrates cytidine 5'-monophosphate-N-acetylneuraminic acid and

Studies on α-sialylation using sialyl donors with an auxiliary 3-thiophenyl group
Carbohydrate Research, 1997Reaction of the methyl ester of 2-chloro-3-S-phenyl-3-thiosialic acid (4) with sodium thiomethoxide in acetonitrile at 0 degrees C affords the methyl ester of 2-S-methyl-3-S-phenyl-2,3-di-thio-alpha-sialic acid (6a) in quantitative yield.
