Sigma‐2 Receptor Ligands and Their Perspectives in Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

Medicinal Research Reviews, 2013
AbstractThe sigma‐2 receptor is highly expressed in various rapidly proliferating cancer cells and regarded as a cancer cell biomarker. Selective sigma‐2 ligands have been shown to specifically label the tumor sites, induce cancer cells to undergo apoptosis, and inhibit tumor growth.

N-Arylalkylpiperidines as High-Affinity Sigma-1 and Sigma-2 Receptor Ligands: Phenylpropylamines as Potential Leads for Selective Sigma-2 Agents

Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2002
To delineate the differences between the structural requirements necessary for recognition at sigma-1 and sigma-2 receptors, a range of phenethyl- and phenylpropylpiperidines were evaluated in binding assays. Phenethylpiperidines were found to favor sigma-1 receptors, whereas phenylpropylpiperidines tend to favor sigma-2 receptors.

Abstract 2242: Development of selective irreversible antagonists for sigma-2 receptors.

Cancer Research, 2013
Abstract Sigma-1 and sigma-2 receptors are potential targets for therapeutic and diagnostic agents for various types of cancer. Sigma-1 receptors promote proliferation and survival, whereas activation of sigma-2 receptors induces apoptosis.

Sigma-2 Receptors: An Emerging Target for CNS PET Imaging Studies

2020
The sigma-2 (σ2) receptor represents one of the most poorly understood proteins in cell biology. Although this receptor was identified through in vitro binding studies over 30 years ago, the molecular identity of this protein was not unambiguously determined until 2017.

Involvement of sigma 2 receptor on motor disorder

2014
Sigma (σ) receptors are a well defined class of receptors present in CNS as well as in peripheral tissues. Pharmacological studies have identified two subtypes of σ receptors, σ1 and σ2. However, their endogenous ligands still remains unknown. Moreover, it has not been well defined which are the signal transduction pathways triggered by those receptors.

Abstract 1054: Identification of progesterone receptor membrane component-1 as the putative sigma-2 receptor

Cancer Research, 2010
Abstract Sigma binding sites represent a unique class of receptors and are highly expressed in tumor cells. Two sigma binding site subtypes, known as sigma-1 and sigma-2 receptors, were distinguished based on differences in their pharmacological profiles and molecular weights.

Discovery Of New Sigma-2 Receptor Agonist Endowed With Antiproliferative Activity

2016
Sigma receptors (σR) have proved to be an attractive pharmacological target for the treatment of several pathologies. In particular, σ1 ligands have been considered to play an important role in the treatment of various neurological disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, neuropathic pain, Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease.

Sigma 2 receptors as potential biomarkers of proliferation in breast cancer.

Cancer research, 1997
sigma 1 and sigma 2 receptors have been shown to exist in a number of rodent and human tumor cell lines. Although their expression is heterogeneous and their function is unknown, sigma receptors have been proposed as potential targets for diagnostic tumor-imaging agents. In this study, the density of sigma 2 receptors in proliferative (P) and quiescent
