Extinction Curves for Graphite-Silicate Grain Mixtures [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1970
Mixtures of graphite particles ejected from carbon stars and silicates from oxygen-rich giants are capable of producing excellent fits to the observed interstellar extinction curve. The fits extend over the entire wavelength range of the observations, and include a hump at ~ 2200 Å in the ultraviolet due to the graphite components of the mixtures.

Massive Protostellar Disks as a Hot Laboratory of Silicate Grain Evolution

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Typical accretion disks around massive protostars are hot enough for water ice to sublimate. We here propose to utilize the massive protostellar disks for investigating the collisional evolution of silicate grains with no ice mantle, which is an ...

In-situ observation and mechanism of calcium–magnesium–alumina–silicate (CMAS) melts-induced degradation of RE2SiO5 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm, and Yb) ceramics at 1500 °C

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Ceramics, 2023
Rare earth (RE) silicate is one of the most promising environmental barrier coatings for silicon-based ceramics in gas turbine engines. However, calcium–magnesium–alumina–silicate (CMAS) corrosion becomes much more serious and is the critical challenge ...

Chemistry of accessory chromian spinel in serpentinites from the Penjwen ophiolite rocks, Zagros thrust zone, [PDF]

open access: yesKirkuk Journal of Science, 2009
Chromian spinel is a widespread accessory mineral in ultramafic rocks of the Penjwen ophiolite, occurring in two modes; fresh grains in dunite rocks that crop out in the eastern part and altered grains in serpentinized peridotites in the western part of ...

INTERSTELLAR SILICATE ANALOGS FOR GRAIN-SURFACE REACTION EXPERIMENTS: GAS-PHASE CONDENSATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE SILICATE DUST GRAINS

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2013
Amorphous, astrophysically relevant silicates were prepared by laser ablation of siliceous targets and subsequent quenching of the evaporated atoms and clusters in a helium/oxygen gas atmosphere. The described gas-phase condensation method can be used to synthesize homogeneous and astrophysically relevant silicates with different compositions ranging ...
