Primary Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Kidney

The histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of a primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the renal parenchyma are described. Tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin, neuron-specific enolase, and Leu 7, but Grimelius- and chromogranin-negative. They also exhibited positivity with anti-MIC2 antibody.

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the petrous apex

With the exception of moderately differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma of the larynx, neuroendocrine carcinomas are very rare head and neck malignancies. We report a case of a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the petrous apex of the temporal bone. This unusual site for this tumour has not yet been reported in the literature.

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma affects children and adults and presents at a mean age of approximately 65 years. Women are involved more than men. The majority of cases involve the parotid gland, presenting as single or multiple masses. Most cases of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma behave as high-grade malignancies.

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma is an unusual laryngeal carcinoma accounting for slightly less than 0.5% of carcinomas. To date, approximately 125 cases have been reported. These tumors most often present in the 6th and 7th decades in men who are heavy cigarette smokers.
