Geo-engineering using dust grains in heliotropic elliptical orbits

open access: yes, 2011
This paper examines the concept of a Saturn-like Earth ring comprised of dust grains to offset global warming. A new family of non-Keplerian periodic orbits, under the effects of solar radiation pressure and the Earth’s oblateness J2 perturbation, is ...

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

Characterization of a new Lr52 allele for leaf rust resistance in the Iranian wheat landrace PI 622111

open access: yesThe Plant Genome
Leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina (Pt), poses a constant threat to global wheat production, and novel leaf rust resistance genes are needed to combat the disease.

Breeding for Sclerotinia Blight Resistance on Peanut in the U.S.: A Review

open access: yesAgronomy
Sclerotinia blight is one of the most widespread and economically damaging diseases of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), causing significant crop losses in cooler production areas across the world.

Evaluating Selection of a Quantitative Trait: Snow Mold Tolerance in Winter Wheat

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences & Environment, 2019
Core Ideas Six quantitative trait loci for snow mold tolerance were detected in a winter wheat recombinant inbred line population. Marker‐assisted selection to incorporate QTL is unlikely to help breed for highly quantitative traits.

Composition‐Tuned Enhancement of the Anomalous Nernst Effect in FeCo–Pt Thin Films on Rigid and Flexible Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Disordered (Fe50Co50)1−xPtx thin films exhibit a pronounced anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) with a strong composition dependence on both rigid and flexible substrates. The transverse thermoelectric response peaks near 22.5 at.% Pt, accompanied by enhanced αxy/σxy scaling, thermal transport, and ANE sensitivity.

Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...
