Small dark energy without small parameters

open access: yes, 2017
We present a prototype model that resolves the cosmological constant problem using matter alone, i.e., without modifying gravity. Its generic cosmological solutions adjust an arbitrarily large, negative dark energy to a positive value parametrically suppressed by an initial field velocity.

Variability in genetic parameters among small populations

open access: yesGenetical Research, 1977
SUMMARYFor a model in which quantitative traits are assumed to be determined solely by additive genes at many loci, formulae are developed for the variance among replicated small populations of sizeN, maintained without selection, of the additive genetic variance, heritability, genetic correlations and similar parameters. The base population is assumed

The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.

Design Parameters for a Small-Gauge Fragmatome

open access: yesTranslational Vision Science & Technology, 2019
Manufacturers of surgical instrumentation have increasingly sought to decrease the size of ophthalmic surgical instruments. We have used finite element modeling to model the stress and strain present in a fragmatome as a function of driving frequency and fragmatome dimensions.Finite element calculations using the COMSOL Multiphysics system v3.5 were ...

In vitro models of cancer‐associated fibroblast heterogeneity uncover subtype‐specific effects of CRISPR perturbations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

Reconciling a Small Density Parameter to Inflation

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 1991
A theoretical model is proposed in which a decaying cosmological constant fills up the gap between Ω = 1 as expected from the inflationary scenario and the observed small value Ω ≲0.1.

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Laplace approximation for rough differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion

open access: yes, 2013
We consider a rough differential equation indexed by a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. When the rough differential equation is driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H$ ($1 ...

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.
